  1. GET FIT make sense of maps FUN navigation - a life skill ORIENTEERING Adventure IN THE COMMUNITY TRAINING EVENINGS BASED IN THE SWAINBY and NORTHALLERTON AREA. EASILY ACCESSIBLE FROM THE NORTH AND SOUTH WHERE? initially our base will be at Swainby village hall(Room 2). £2 per session. WHEN? Monday nights 6.30pm - 8pm - during school term time. All year round. Starts 1st Oct 2012 WHY? • If you love the outdoors, want to improve your running, navigate at speed and be competitive at this great sport, then you should come along! • WHO? • Minimum age 12, unless accompanied by an adult.

The NAVIGATION TECHNIQUE sessions will cover: • map interpretation, scales and symbols • compass refresher, bearings and techniques • contours • route choice, simplification and technique • relocation • night navigation technique • approaching different types of terrain • bringing everything together • PHYSICAL TRAINING will be structured for the orienteering season. Strength and endurance will be the focus in the winter months. Speed and technique in the summer months. FUN COMPETITIONS Adventure, treasure hunt, evenings using OS, street and orienteering maps will be a regular part of the sessions. Orienteering is  - thinking and decision making on the run! Orienteering is a running sport. Some fitness is assumed but a range of fitness levels will be accommodated. No previous navigational experience is required. You take part at your own risk.
