  5. Folk Music • German music includes many volkslieder or folk songs.  These are taught to children.  The many different regions of Germany have their own different styles of folk music. Oom-pah is a type of music played by the brass bands. • Popular folk songs include emigration songs, work songs and songs about democracy.

  7. Yodelling • Yodelling is a type of wordless singing which appears in many cultures, although it is most closely associated with German folk music. It involves holding an extended single note and changing it so that it changes from high to low. • Sounds like“yodl-ay-ee-oooo.” • According to legend, yodelling developed as a method of communication in the German Mountain regions. By calling in an area which could echo, the yodeller could project sound across long distances.

  12. Schuhplatter dancing • Schuhplatter dancing is a series of jumps and hip movements to the time of the music.  Performed my male dancers, they strike their thighs, knees and soles of their feet.  They also clap their hands and stamp their feet.
