  2. Introduction • Most common in near-term and term infants • Sometimes called RDS type II • Retention of fetal lung fluid past birth plays a role in the syndrome • Associated with C-section deliveries and precipitous deliveries

  3. Diagnosis • Considered a diagnosis of exclusion • Usual signs of respiratory distress • Chest X-ray often similar to RDS except streaky infilitrates & hyperinflation • Relatively benign condition, usually clears within 24-48 hours with only minimal interventions

  5. Treatment • Prophylactic antibiotics • Warmed, humidified oxygen via oxyhood • Need for positive pressure ventilation is rare
