  1. Priesthood R. D. Nelson, Raising up a Faithful Priest: Community and Priesthood in Biblical Theology (WestminsterJohn Knox, 1993)

  2. Sociological Functions • Boundary setters: Leviticus 10:10 10 You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean; Not the role of any ruler or king; reserved for the priests

  3. Not always actualized • Ezek 22:26- Its priests have done violence to my teaching and have profaned my holy things; they have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they taught the difference between the unclean and the clean, and they have disregarded my sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.

  4. Future hope of restoration • Ezek 44:23- They shall teach my people the difference between the holy and the common, and show them how to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.

  5. II. Boundary maintainers • Teachers-- Lev 10:11- and you are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the Lord has spoken to them through Moses. • Judges-- Ezek 44:24-In a controversy they shall act as judges, and they shall decide it according to my judgments.

  6. II. Boundary maintainers (cont.) • Restorers- ritual performance (Leviticus 1-7) Lev 4:22,25--When a ruler sins, doing unintentionally any one of all the things that by commandments of the Lord his God ought not to be done and incurs guilt, 25 The priest shall take some of the blood Compromised relationships restored

  7. Maintaining • Maintain order and stability • Order established at creation • 6 profane days, one holy day • Order of tabernacle and Temple • Gradations of holiness- recognized and maintained by priests • The priest as referee

  8. Rise of the priesthood Exod 32:26: then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, “Who is on the Lord ’s side? Come to me!” And all the sons of Levi gathered around him. 27 He said to them, “Thus says the Lord , the God of Israel, ‘Put your sword on your side, each of you! Go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill your brother, your friend, and your neighbor.’ ” 28 The sons of Levi did as Moses commanded, and about three thousand of the people fell on that day. 29 Moses said, “Today you have ordained yourselvesfor the service of the Lord , each one at the cost of a son or a brother, and so have brought a blessing on yourselves this day.”

  9. Basis for further tasks • Deut 33:8-11--8 And of Levi he said: Give to Leviyour Thummim, and your Urim to your loyal one, whom you tested at Massah, with whom you contended at the waters of Meribah;9 who said of his father and mother, “I regard them not”; he ignored his kin, and did not acknowledge his children. For they observed your word, and kept your covenant. 10 They teach Jacob your ordinances, and Israel your law; they place incense before you, and whole burnt offerings on your altar.

  10. Urim and Thummim • Oracles from God • 1 Sam 14:36-42 (binary choice; cf. 28:6) • Related to the Ephod (1 Sam 23:6, 9-12) • Don’t know exact function- perhaps with pocket for U&T

  11. Teaching • Jer 18:18; Mal 2:7 • Making and maintaining boundaries- not a secret task (Haggai 2:11-13) • 2 Kings 17:24-28 [This is really the purpose of all of Leviticus] • Not purveyors of new revelation; provide application of previous revelation.

  12. Sacrifice and offerings • Role as stated in Leviticus 1-7 • Their professional literature (how to manual of the trade) is the end of Exodus and Leviticus • Practical literature for a practical profession

  13. Practical application to today How does your ministry, the one you are in today or the one you are now training for, fit into our discussion of the priest and levite? In what way is your church showing the ‘priesthood of all believers’?
