Summary of GA Work Ready Region Project Group 4 Name of Region: Georgia Mountain Manufacturing Date: September 7, 2011 Project Team Leader: Gerald Turner Strategic Industry: Metal Fabrication, Furniture, and Geotextiles Region Leadership Team Members Regional Industry Network Meetings Work Ready Certified Community Status and Go For Gold

What’s New in Your Region? • All high school students will take the Georgia Work Ready Assessments earlier in the year • Established 6-county regional industry team • Hosted 1st GMM Industry Team meeting August 17, featuring guest speaker Melvin Everson. • Some 54 education, industry, and government leaders attended. Mr. Everson also visited • Caterpillar and Sage Automotive Interiors while in town. • Melvin Everson hosted a Town Hall meeting at NGTC-Clarkesville Campus. The roundtable • discussion centered around HB186 and soft skills education. Industry leaders and educators • agreed that students and our workforce are lacking in soft skills. The roundtable panel • recommended that soft skill training start in elementary schools. • Banks and White Counties still lack private sector assessments. Our goal is to have both certified • by 12/1/11. • A total of 18 students have enrolled in applied engineering pathways with high schools, technical colleges, and • Southern Poly Technical College • GMM is now awarding $50 gift certificates to individuals that take gap training and improve by • one level and $100 to those scoring platinum on the assessment. • Best Practice from your Region? • All invoices are paid by SCDA within 2 weeks • Monthly meetings and communication letter sent to Core Team with highlights and needs • High school faculty & administrators are taking GWR assessments • All schools are very supportive of our GMM Initiative • Tech schools provide face-to-face gap training • $50 incentive for gap training, retaking the assessment, and moving up a level • $100 incentive for platinum on GWR assessment • Issues/Concerns from your Region? • 3 tech schools makes the job more difficult • Struggling with industry participation and should provide more support for smaller companies • Concerns about what projects will qualify for funding • Need easier access to data • 2 counties struggling to meet assessment goals • Backlog of manufacturing job profiles to complete in 2011
