  1. Healthy Eyes and Ears List the ways your eyes and ears help you understand your environment: • Recognize friends • Read books • Hear people • Listen to favorite music

  2. Words to Know! • Nearsighted- you can see near objects, but distant objects appear blurry. • Farsighted- you can see far object clearly, but closer object appear blurry. • Astigmatism- the shape of your cornea or lens causes person’s vision blurry.

  3. Parts of the Eye • Optic – is the nerve that carries messages to the brain • Sclera – is the covering that protects the eye from the inside • Cornea – it lets the light in • Iris – it gives color to the eye

  4. Parts of the Eye • Pupil – it controls amount of light going in to the eye • Lens – it focuses the image • Retina – it changes light rays into images that your eyes can see

  5. Taking Care of Your Eyes • Protect your eyes from eyestrain - read in well-lighted room • Protect your eyes from injury - use protective gear for eyes • Protect your eyes from infection - do not rub your eyes • Get regular checkups

  6. Vision Problems • Nearsighted- you can see near objects, but distant objects appear blurry • Farsighted- you can see far object clearly, but closer object appear blurry • Astigmatism- the shape of your cornea or lens causes a wavy or blurred image

  10. Taking Care of Your Ears One important way to take care of your ears is to protect them from loud noises.

  11. Ear Problems • The most common ear problem is infection of the middle ear • The most serious problems are hearing loss and deafness • A total hearing loss can result from ear injury, disease, or birth defects
