  3. OBJECTIVE At the end of this class, participants will have a better understanding of the Standards For Required Professional Development For Teachers and how they relate to Summative Evaluation and PIP’s.

  4. 6A:9-15 Required Professional development for teachers (a) Each active teacher shall be required to complete 100 clock hours of State-approved continuing professional development and/or inservice every five years. ... (b) The content of each teacher’s continuing education shall be specified in a Professional Development Plan (PDP) (c) The content of each teacher’s continuing education shall align with the Professional Development Standards for Teachers (d) The activities in each teacher’s Professional Development Plan shall align with the Professional Development Standards for Teachers as follows

A SHIFT IN OUR THINKING • Professional Development: • is viewed as a collaborative effort • is created based on district/school/educator needs • is the most important element of systemic reform • includes job embedded opportunities as well as formal training • is a necessity that needs time and funding

  13. A SHIFT IN OUR THINKING • Time Suggestions: • staff development days • realignment of schedules • professional development school involvement • delayed openings/early dismissals • lengthening the school year

  15. A SHIFT IN OUR THINKING • Focus is on improving student learning: • takes student needs seriously • encourages sustained and supportive leadership • embraces both formal and informal professional development

  19. ROLES OF THE DISTRICT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE • Assess the professional development needs of staff • Develop the district professional development plan • Submit the district plan to the county board for approval

  20. ROLES OF THE COUNTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BOARD • Review the district profile • Provide comment to the local committees on the plan • Approve or disapprove district plans based on the county review process

  21. District Plan Development • Responsibility of the local professional development committee to develop a plan, based on: • needs of teachers/needs of students • goals of district • school goals

  22. Creating a District Profile • Provides a snapshot of the district • Provides relevant school data • Makes use of school report card data, when appropriate

  23. Needs of Districts • Needs assessment should include: • teacher needs • student needs

  24. Data for Needs Assessment • grades and sample academic work • standardized tests and teacher made tests • curriculum • homework/student work • non academic data

What Counts? • Professional development must be consistent with the Standards for Professional Development • Professional development should include a variety of opportunities that deepen content knowledge and enrich pedagogical skills • Professional development should be tailored to unique needs of staff members

  28. What Counts? • Categories of Professional Development: • Formal courses and conferences • Courses, seminars and activities for other license/certification maintenance

  30. INDEPENDENT STUDY REQUIREMENTS • The PDP must include a rationale describing consistency with the standards • The individual and supervisor must discuss the projected number of hours to be spent • The individual must maintain a log of hours completed

  32. 6A:32-4.5 Evaluation of Tenured Teaching Staff Members (f) The annual written performance report … shall include, but not be limited to: 1. Performance areas of strength; 2. Performance areas needing improvement based upon the job description; 3. An individual professional development plan developed by the supervisor and the teaching staff member; 4. A summary of available indicators of pupil progress and growth …

Evaluation of Tenured Teaching Staff Members (h) For the purpose of this section 3. “ Individual professional development plan” is a written statement of actions developed by the supervisor and the teaching staff member to correct deficiencies or to continue professional growth, timelines for their implementation, and the responsibilities of the individual teaching staff member and the district for implementing the plan;
