  1. Review Chapters 1-4

  2. Example 1 • In order to plan transportation and parking needs at a private high school. The administrators asked students how they get to school. Some rode a bus, some rode with parents or friends, and others used “personal” transportation- bikes, skateboards or just walked.

  3. Question 1 • Identify the variables and tell whether each is categorical or quantitative. • In order to plan transportation and parking needs at a private high school. The administrators asked students how they get to school. Some rode a bus, some rode with parents or friends, and others used “personal” transportation- bikes, skateboards or just walked. Categorical-gender and mode of transportation

  4. Question 2 • Which of the W’s are unknown for these data? • In order to plan transportation and parking needs at a private high school. The administrators asked students how they get to school. Some rode a bus, some rode with parents or friends, and others used “personal” transportation- bikes, skateboards or just walked. • We do not know how or when the students were surveyed. We also do not know where the school is.

  5. Question 3 • Find each percent • What percent of the students are girls who ride the bus? 18.1% • What percent of the girls ride the bus? • 33.3% • What percent of the bus riders are girls? • 53.1%

  6. Question 4 • What is the marginal distribution of gender? • There are 86 males and 102 females

  7. Question 5 • Write a sentence or two about the conditional relative frequency distribution of modes of transportation for the boys. • More boys (43%) caught rides to school than any other means of transportation. 35% rode the bus while only 22% used personal transportation such as biking, skateboarding or walking.

  8. Question 6 • Do you think mode of transportation is independent of gender? Give statistical evidence to support your conclusion. • The way the students get to school does seem to be independent. Of gender. Overall 34% of the students ride the bus, compared to 35% for the boys and 33%for the girls. 44% of all students caught rides with someone, compared to 43% for the boys and 44% for the girls. 22%of all students used personal transportation which is almost the same as 23% for the girls and the same as the 22% for the boys. These data provide little indication of the difference in mode of transportation between boys and girls at this school.

  9. Chapter 4 Part • Look at distributions of hair lengths of the boys and girls in the class.

  10. Question 1 • Describe the shape of the distribution for the girls and the boys.

  11. Question 2 • What aspects of the graphs for the girls and the boys make the comparison difficult?
