  1. Chapter 12!!! By: Brandon Head 4th period 2/17/12

  2. Manifest Desstiny • The belief that it was the fate of the United States to expand its borders from sea to sea • John O’Sullivan came up with it in the 1840s .

  3. Oregon Country • Was between the Pacific, the Rocky Mountains, and north of California • Oregon, Washington, parts of Montana and Wyoming. • Adams-Onis Treaty • 2000 mile journey, started in towns in Missouri. Went over the Great Plains and through the South Pass of the Rockies. Went across the Platte River, Snake River, and the Columbia River. • Was the Democratic slogan, referred to the line of latitude that they believed should be the northern border of Oregon.

  4. Texas • Texans won their independence from Mexico and asked to be admitted to the United States. • Started in 1803 • Stephen F. Austin- led old 300 to Texas • Mexican Government banned U.S. immigration-Americans wanted independence. • 1833- General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna becomes president • Alamo: Old mission- Battle of the Alamo

  5. Texas cont. • Texas declares independence on March 2, 1836 at Washington-on-the-Brazos. • New Commander in Chief- Sam Houston

  6. Battle of San Jacinto • April 21, 1836 • “Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!” • After battle, Santa Anna signed treaty which recognized the independence of Texas • Jackson refuses annex: Extra slave state would upset the balance of free:slave states • 1844: Texas becomes a state • James K. Polk

  7. War with Mexico • New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming • Santa Fe Trail- Route that William Becknell followed - Went through the prairies to the Arkansas River, followed south to Rocky Mountains, turned south into New Mexico territory. • Trade with New Mexico= Americans settle in area • Spanish explorers and Mexican missionaries first Europeans to settle in California.
