  1. 6 Week CCA Review ORGANIC COMPOUNDS Compounds that contain carbon. Other elements associated with Carbon in an organic compound would include: Sulfur,Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen and Phosphorus

  2. Carbon + SHNOP= Organic Compound Remember the characteristics of Organic Compounds: You are looking for Carbon then any “SHNOP!

  3. Large molecules of nutrients must be broken down into smaller molecules before they can be absorbed

  4. Which type of changes occur in the mouth when a cracker is chewed and exposed to saliva? Physical Digestion occurs as the cracker is being chewed by the teeth and swallowed. Chemical Digestion occurs as saliva glands in the mouth secrete enzymes and convert starches/carbohydrates in the cracker into sugar that is used by the bodies cells to produce energy. Chemical energy stored in food is converted into thermal/heat energy similarly to the way a car converts the energy stored in gasoline.

  5. Examples of physical digestion Chewing food. Swallowing food. The stomach liquefies food and pushes into the small intestine. Peristalsis in the esophagus and intestines.

  6. Examples of Chemical Digestion Amylase in saliva converts Carbohydrates into sugar. Stomach acid breaking down proteins. Enzymes in the intestines breaking down nutrients allowing them to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

  7. What are the functions of the skeletal system? Support Protection Movement (the muscular system helps the body move)

  8. What is the function of the Muscular System? Aids in movement. Part of the cardiovascular system (the heart, arteries and veins). Part of the digestive system (all of the primary organs contain muscle-peristalsis). Part of the respiratory system (diaphragm)

  9. What is the function of the Respiratory System? This system is responsible for the exchange of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2). This process is referred to as the Blood Gas Exchange.

  10. Which system is responsible for communications throughout the body? The Nervous System (controls skeletal muscles which allows the body to move).

  11. Which system acts as an outer protective layer for the body? The integumentary system.
