  3. Objective • SWBAT solve radical equations

  4. Section 11.3 “Solve Radical Equations” • An equation that contains a radical expression with a variable in the radicand is called a radical equation. • To solve a radical equation, you need to ISOLATE the radical on one side and then square both sides of the equation. If then If then

  5. EXAMPLE 1 Solve a Radical Equation What if???? Add 8 to each side. Divide each side by 2. Square each side, to get rid of the radical. No Real Solutions Simplify. Check solution. 0 = 0

  6. EXAMPLE 1 Try It Out Add 3 to each side. Divide each side by 12. Square each side, to get rid of the radical. Simplify. Check solution. 0 = 0

  7. EXAMPLE 2 Solve a Radical Equation Subtract 12 from each side. Divide each side by 4. Square each side, to get rid of the radical. Solve for x. Add 7 to both sides. Simplify Check. 28 = 28

  8. EXAMPLE 2 Try It Out… Subtract 7 from each side. Square each side, to get rid of the radical. Solve for x. Add 5 to both sides. Simplify Check. 12 = 12

  9. EXAMPLE 3 Solve a Radical Equation Square each side, to get rid of the radical. Solve for x. Simplify Check.

  10. EXAMPLE 3 Solve a Radical Equation Add radical 2x -1 to both sides, to isolate radicals. Square each side, to get rid of the radical. Solve for x. Simplify Check. 0 =0

  11. EXAMPLE 4 Solve a Radical Equation Check. Square each side, to get rid of the radical. Simplify Simplify Squaring both sides of the equation can result in a solution that is NOT true in the original equation. Such a solution is called an EXTRANEOUS SOLUTION. Factor. Solve for x.

  12. EXAMPLE 4 Solve a Radical Equation Check. Square each side, to get rid of the radical. Simplify Simplify Factor. Solve for x. Squaring both sides of the equation can result in a solution that is NOT true in the original equation. Such a solution is called an EXTRANEOUS SOLUTION.
