  2. 10/2/2013 2-1 B Intro to Fractions and Estimating Products In this section, we will learn how to estimate products of fractions using compatible numbers and rounding.

  3. Iris was playing skee ball at an arcade and scored 20 points or higher ⅔ of the time. If she rolled a total of 15 balls, how many times did she earn 20 points or higher

  4. Iris, rolled 10 balls that scored 20 points or higher.

  5. Find 5/7 of 14 • Divide the bar into seven equal sections because the denominator is 7. Five sevenths of 14 is 5 × 2 or 10.

  6. Remember… • Compatible numbers: • numbers that are close in value to the actual numbers and easy to add, subtract, multiply, or divide mentally

  7. Example 1 Find a multiple of 5 close to 28. 30 and 5 are compatible numbers since 30 ÷ 5 = 6.  6

  8. Example 2 16 and 4 are compatible numbers since 16 ÷ 4 = 4.

  9. Estimate Fractions by Rounding to 0, ½, or 1 -If the numerator is -almost as large as the denominator, round up ⅞ rounds to 1 -much smaller than the denominator, round down ⅛ rounds to 0

  10. Example 3 → 1 × 0 1 × 0 = 0

  11. Round to the nearestwhole number. Example 4 Estimate the area of the square. → 7 × 7 = 49 The area is about 49 in2.
