  2. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW.. • When is fall protection required? • What kind of fall protection is acceptable? • What are some different types of fall protection? • Do you have the right equipment? • Is your plant safe?

WHEN IS FALL PROTECTION NEEDED… • Whenever work is to be performed on a surface that offers a 6 foot or greater fall to a lower level with unprotected sides, a personal fall arrest system shall be used. • If the work is to be performed on a surface that offers a 6 foot or greater fall, but guardrails or other means of fall protection are in place, a fall arrest system is not necessary, but may be used. • A fall arrest system is not required while climbing ladders, scaffolds or other means of accessing an elevated work surface, however may be required once the work surface is accessed.

  4. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? FALL ARREST… • A system or device used to prevent a worker from coming in contact with a lower level should a fall occur and/or fall protection has failed or was not used. A full body harness, lanyard and an anchor point are the most common components that make up a fall arrest system. FALL PROTECTION… • Is an engineering control used to stop a fall from occurring. If fall protection is provided, such as guardrails or safety netting, a fall arrest system is not required, but may be utilized as well.

  5. MAKE SURE YOU….. • Inspect your equipment prior to each use. If there are any deficiencies at all, place the equipment out of service and notify the safety department. • Have everything you need. If you are missing pieces of your equipment, it will not be effective in preventing a fall. This includes an anchor point to hook to. Make sure it is capable of sustaining at least 5000 lbs of force for every employee tied to it. • Know the proper way to use your equipment. If it is not worn or used correctly, it may not be effective. A lanyard does no good at all if it is hooked to itself or stuck in your pocket!
