  1. Lab #15 Blood What are the parts of the blood? What are some diseases that affect human blood?

  2. TASK #1 OBSERVING RED BLOOD CELLS, WHITE BLOOD CELLS AND PLATELETS

  3. Human Blood Parts • Red Blood Cells(Erythrocytes = scientific name) • Carry oxygen (gas) • Protein = Hemoglobin – helps them hold on to the oxygen • Most numerous in a blood smear

  4. Red Blood Cells • Draw one or two RBC’s on your chart on page 2 where it says drawings and labels • Label • Cell membrane • Cytoplasm • Number of cells in field (count) = 100 Cell membrane Cytoplasm

  5. Human Blood Parts • White Blood Cells (Leukocytes = scientific name) • Function in the immune system • Much larger than RBC’s • Least Numerous • Surround and engulf bacteria = phagocytosis • Since they help fight infections a high number of them may indicate that you are sick and/or have a disease!

  6. White Blood Cells • Draw one or two WBC’s on your chart on page 2 where it says drawings and labels • Label: • Cell membrane • Cytoplasm • Nucleus • Number of cells in field (count) = 15 Cell membrane Nuclear material This is it!! Cytoplasm

  7. Human Blood Parts • Platelets (Thrombocyte = scientific name) • Function in clotting • “Dot-like” fragments scattered throughout smear • Cell fragments, not cells! • Next most numerous

  8. Platelets • Draw some platelets on your chart on page 2 where it says drawings and labels. • You DO NOT have to label anything for these. • They are the little purple dots!!! • “t” stands for thrombocyte • Number of cells in field (count) = 50

  9. Human Blood Parts • Plasma • Functions in transporting nutrients and hormones. • Separates this way due to density. • Yellowish in color • On your lab, sketchthe test tube showing the separation of blood • Labelthe parts of the blood as shown in the diagram

  10. TASK #2 Observing a healthy human blood smear

  11. Human Blood Smear • Identify: • Red Blood cell • Label cell membrane • Label cytoplasm • WBC • Label cell membrane • Label cytoplasm • Label nucleus • Platelets White blood cell Magnification 800x

  12. TASK #3 Observing common blood diseases and disorders

  13. Leukemia Smear • Identify: • Red Blood cell • Label cell membrane • Label cytoplasm • WBC • NOTICE THAT THE NUCLEUS IS MUCH BIGGER! • Label cell membrane • Label cytoplasm • Label nucleus • Platelets Diseased white blood cell Magnification 800x

  14. SICKLE CELL ANEMIA • Identify: • Red Blood cell • Label cell membrane • Label cytoplasm • Sickle cell • WBC • Label cell mem • Label cytoplasm • Label nucleus • Platelets Magnification 800x

  15. Mononucleosis Smear • Identify: • Red Blood cell • Label cell membrane • Label cytoplasm • WBC • NOTICE THE WATERY APPEARANCE OF THE WBC • Label cell membrane • Label cytoplasm • Label nucleus • Platelets Magnification 800x

  16. TASK #4 Observing the blood of other vertebrates

  17. Frog Blood • Identify: • Red Blood cell • Label cell membrane • Label cytoplasm • Label nucleus • WBC • Label cell mem • Label cytoplasm • Label nucleus • Platelets Platelet

  18. Bird blood • Identify: • Red Blood cell • Label cell membrane • Label cytoplasm • Label nucleus • WBC • Label cell mem • Label cytoplasm • Label nucleus • Platelets • Just draw some dots! Red blood cell White blood cell
