  2. Historical context • 1485: The Wars of the Roses had come to an end, Tudor had the power • XV Century: profound change • 1474: Caxton printed his first English test • 1553: the Reformation by Henry VIII • XVI Century: the Renaissance came to an end

The rebirth • Modern English • Discoveries of science (theory of Copernicus: Earth isn’t at center of the universe) and explorations (1492: discovery of America by Columbus) • Developments in art and learning inspired by the classical world  scholars learnt the classical texts in Latin and Greek • Central position of the human body (privileged code) HUMANISM

  4. A new world view • New necessities (a new approach was born) thanks to political stability  uncertainty and restlessness • The Chain of Being • New secular world view • Woman less underrated, Elizabeth I was a powerful monarch

  5. Religion • The religious code wasn’t the main one anymore • Reformation by Henry VII • England became Protestant and independent the king headed up both Church and the State

  6. Literature Literature was inspired by Italian poets and scholars. • Poetry: personal and private • Drama: Shakespeare, Marlowe, Greene, Nashe • Metaphysical poetry: John Donne and George Herbert, innovative poets: examination of the relationship between man and the universe.
