  1. TERRE HAUTE NORTHPATRIOTS IRON SHARPENS IRON As One Man Sharpens Another Proverbs 27:17

  2. TERRE HAUTE NORTH PATRIOTSRules, Expectations, & Information

  3. Welcome and Congratulations! • You will hold yourself to higher standards and our staff will be intolerant of a weak commitment. • Because of this you will be a better person and increase your chances of future success in whatever endeavor you undertake. • Work ethic, leadership, teamwork, time management, perseverance, goal-setting, commitment, and communication are just some of the skills you will develop.

  4. Introduction of staff. • Introduction of seniors.

  5. 1. Do what’s right! 2. Do your best! 3. Treat people the way you want to be treated! These acts will become habits if you choose to practice them all of the time. TEAM RULES

  6. PLAYER EXPECTATIONS 1. Be positive (how do we react to what happens) 2. Work hard (pay the price-few are willing) 3. No excuses (waste of time-get the job done) 4. Sense of urgency (get it done quickly & correctly) 5. Attention to detail (little things win championships) 6. Expect Victory (you get what you expect in life) 7. Finish (every drill, set, rep, homework, job, etc.)

  7. THREE C’S • COMMITMENT • CHARACTER • CONSISTENCY

  8. THREE E’S • EFFORT • EXECUTION • ENTHUSIASM

  9. CONSEQUENCES • PUSH-UPS. • PPC (Post Practice Conditioning-Can get up to 5 days). • PROBATION-Repeat offenses, coming off of suspension, cannot start if on probation. Athletes will be in PPC until off probation. • SUSPENSION-Cannot play in games, PPC. • EXCLUSION-Removed from team.

  10. SUBSTANCE ABUSE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! • Alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, meth, etc. will damage your health, academic standing, and athletic performance. They will destroy you as a person and will keep you and our team from reaching its full potential. • Steroids are illegal and harmful to your health. They are used by cheaters and people who cannot get it done the right way. • Speed, uppers, caffeine, etc. will decrease performance and damage health.

  11. CONSEQUENCES OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE OR VIOLATION OF THE LAW • 1st offense: 2 game suspension and indefinite probation/ppc. • 2nd offense: Exclusion from any sport for 365 days, indefinite probation/ppc when you return in a year. • 3rd offense: Athletic career at Terre Haute North is over-seek counseling immediately

  12. PICKING PERSONEL 1. Can I trust you? (accountable, under pressure, team rules, your job, academics) 2. Are you committed? (weight room, academics, team rules) 3. Do you care about your teammates? (you or team, Golden Rule, role model) 4. Do you have the ability to get the job done on a consistent basis? (talent, potential vs. productivity, knowledge, class)

  13. PLAYING TIME • 1. Can you get the job done consistently better than your teammates? This is the most overwhelming factor in our decision making. • 2. The three C’s: Commitment, Character, and Consistency. If you don’t make the commitment during off-season or pre-season training forget about it. If your character is lacking how can we count on you, especially during crunch time. If you are not consistent in you dailyattitude, effort, and performance, how can we count on you when things get tough. You may be a great practice player but inconsistent during a game. We need performance in both practice and games.

  14. PLAYING TIME • 3. No player owns a position. All positions are constantly evaluated. Notice that what grade you are in or who started last week or the year before are not factors in deciding who starts the next game. • 4. 99.9% of all parents are emotionally unable to evaluate their son’s athletic ability and they do not have the technical expertise to do so . Parents do not have the ability to evaluate their son daily in the areas of work ethic, performance, and attitude.

  15. PLAYING TIME • 5. Parents are focused on what is best for their kids like they should be. Coaches are focused on what is best for the all 120 plus kids collectively, the team, and the program. • 7. We will have 22 starters at the 9th grade and junior-varsity level. Our goal is to play everyone throughout each game based on the following criteria: 1. they have practiced everyday, 2. they know the plays, 3. they can do their job, and 4. they can defend themselves. This does not mean all playing time will be equal.

  16. PLAYING TIME • 8. Varsity playing time will be monopolized by the best players. Playing time is not guaranteed for non-starters.

  17. INJURIES • 1. Football is a collision sport. Injuries are as much a part of the game as offense and defense. • 3. Football is a game of attrition. To play this game you have to be able to practice hurt as well as play hurt. • 4. It is important that everyone understands the difference between hurt and injured. We want you pushing through the hurt, not injuries (example: concussions). • 5. If you are injured you are expected to be at every football function: practice, strength

  18. INJURIES • 5. If you are injured you are expected to be at every football function: practice, strength conditioning, meetings, etc. Injuries are not an excuse to miss. There will be something for you to do: rehabilitation with our athletic training staff, mental reps, alternative conditioning. If you cannot attend practice inform the head coach.

  19. INJURIES • 6. Injuries that result in an extended loss of practice time will more than likely result in loss of playing time. Many times when an athlete is cleared there is loss of conditioning, reaction time, strength, etc., or someone else has stepped up during that time. This may result in loss of starting position/playing time. If this seems unfair, put yourself in the position of the player who has worked just as hard, stepped it up, and is playing well.

  20. INJURIES • THE NUMBER ONE WAY TO PREVENT INJURIES IS INVOLVEMENT IN OUR STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING PROGRAM.

  21. “Motivation is simple, eliminate those who are not motivated.” Lou Holtz

  22. INFORMATION:Locker room • 2nd home. • Clean and remove cleats before entering. Keep mud off of sidewalks. • Throw trash in trash cans. • All equipment is to be locked in lockers. • All locker doors should be shut. • Flush urinals and stools. • Do not mark up walls or ceilings. • Do not get into other’s lockers.

  23. No pills, prescriptions, or performance enhancing substances are allowed in the locker room without permission of the head coach or head athletic trainer. • Every Wednesday-Thursday lockers are to be completely cleaned with disinfectant. Take home everything that can be washed and throw trash away. • Wash hands before using phone. • Absolutely no horseplay in the locker room.

  24. Stealing • Consequences will be suspension or exclusion-will not be tolerated. • Make sure your items are locked up, don’t give someone an invitation.

  25. Hazing • WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. • Does not promote TEAM. • Will take away from TEAM success. • Breaks team rule #3.

  26. Training Room • Unless you need to be there stay out. • Do not take equipment into training room and do not take supplies out without permission. • Treat our Trainers as part of the coaching staff. • Report all injuries to one of our Trainers. • Take care of all minor cuts, bruises, and abrasions (ice, disinfect, bandage, etc.)

  27. Equipment Room • Do not enter this room without supervision. • You are responsible for your issued equipment. Never loan it out (freshmen). • Game uniforms (pants and tops) are to be turned in after every game-mandatory. • Number your game pants and pads with a permanent marker. • Team managers are to be treated with respect.

  28. School Building • Stay out of academic area of building when school is not in session (especially during camp). • Do not interfere with other teams practices. • Clean up your trash-take pride in your school.

  29. Letter Requirements • 1 play in at least 20 varsity quarters. • Service learning/community service equals 1 quarter. • Honor roll last 12 weeks equals 1 quarter. • Honor roll 1st six weeks equals 1 quarter. • Summer conditioning commitment equals 1 quarter. • Player of the week = 1 quarter. • Scout team player of the year O/D = letter. • Coaches Discretion (ex: start the last three games)

  30. Media • Never say anything negative about your opponent or your team. Show respect. Don’t be baited into negative talk, especially South week. • Always represent yourself and the program with class. • Speak clearly, keep answers short, no sunglasses.

  31. Tie (even when hot), dress shirt (tucked in) and pants, dress shoes are to be worn to school and on bus home. After home games regular clothes can be worn. Pre-game meal is mandatory-don’t be late. No one leaves on game day. Game Day

  32. SIDELINES • You are being watched by everyone in the stands and are making a huge impression about the character of our team. • Stay off the white. • Watch your position. • Know what the situation is. • Do not interact with the fans unless you are creating enthusiasm. No horseplay.

  33. Team Meetings • Sit up straight. • Pencil and notebook, scouting report or playbook. • If tired, stand up in back of or to the side of the group. • Pay attention and learn.

  34. PLAYER PRACTICE POLICY • High tempo, run everywhere, develop a sense of urgency-conditioning. • Shoot for perfection. Pay attention to detail. • Concentrate on: 1. Alignment 2. Stance 3. Assignment • Players play, coaches coach.

  35. PLAYER PRACTICE POLICY • Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm-practice it! (it’s contagious) • No excuses-25 push-ups. • Pay attention when you are not in. (mental reps) • Never place your helmet on the ground-always keep it with you. • Late to practice and you will have PPC. • Absences will result in lost playing time.

  36. PLAYER PRACTICE POLICY • Absences should be reported to a coach before the occurrence. Don’t tell a teammate to do it. • 1st unexcused absence: 1 game suspension. • 2nd unexcused absence: Exclusion from team. • Do not take “coaching” personally. Every coach wants to see you succeed. You will be “pushed.” If you do not want to be pushed you are in the wrong program. • What happens on the field stays on the field. • Never lead with your head or face mask in any situation.

  37. Stay Hydrated! • It is your responsibility to stay hydrated. • Drink water all day long. • Get a drink whenever you need one during practice (use sense when in the middle of a drill). • Weigh in before and out after each practice during two-a-days to monitor water loss. • Proper intake of vitamins and minerals will also help with dehydration preventions (fruits, vegetables, salt).

  38. FOOTBALL FUNCTIONS • All football functions in-season are mandatory. • This includes the Fall Sports Banquet (wear tie, etc.). • This also includes all games, practices, meetings, weightlifting sessions, film sessions, and study tables. • IHSAA does not allow us to make out of season football functions mandatory; however, as a player in this program you should make an extraordinary effort to attend any such function. • Commitment-find a way!

  39. P.R.I.D.E • PERSONAL • RESPONSIBILITY • IN • DAILY • EFFORT

  40. REPRESENT OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY WITH PRIDE AND CLASS!

  41. “The credit belongs to those who are actually in the arena, who strive valiantly; who know the great enthusiasm, the great devotions, and spend themselves in a worthy cause; who at the best, know the triumph of high achievement; and who, at the worst, if they fail, fail while daring greatly, so that their place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither VICTORY nor defeat.” Theodore Roosevelt

  42. "The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will." Vince Lombardi
