A Local Area Network (LAN) interconnects computers within a limited area, such as homes, offices, or schools, enabling resource sharing like files, printers, and gaming. Unlike Wide Area Networks (WANs), LANs cover smaller geographic areas and typically do not rely on leased telecommunication lines. LANs facilitate fast data transmission and are essential for activities like LAN parties, where multiple users connect for multiplayer gaming. Each device on the network, or node, operates independently yet can communicate and share resources, enhancing overall efficiency and collaboration.

What is? • A Local Area Network, or LAN, is a computer network that interconnects computers in a limited area such as a home, office, or school, or giant warehouse rented out for a giant LAN party. • A LAN is different from a Wide Area Connection (WAN) in that they generally have a smaller geographic area, and don’t use leased telecommunication lines.
What do? • LANs are useful for sharing resources like files, printers, games, or other applications. • A LAN can also be used for a LAN party uses a LAN to play multiplayer games in a small, sweaty room for hours at a time. • Obviously, because a LAN party wouldn’t use a WAN. Then it’d be a WAN party.
How do? • Computers or workstations (known as nodes) are connected usually by a sort of cable, most commonly Ethernet for PCs, or over a wireless network. • Each node in a LAN has its own CPU which does its own thing, but can also access data and devices also on the LAN.
Why do? • Any user on the LAN can share anything from laser printers to a .gif of a dancing baby. • LANs are also capable of transmitting data at very fast rates, much faster than say a telephone line or what have you, however...
...However, • There is a limit to how many computers can be attached to a single LAN.
