  3. Results: Conclusion: Carbonates react with acids to produce CO2(g) which is an acidic gas.

  4. Acids and Metal Carbonates • Carbonate rocks are used in a lot of buildings. When acid rain falls on these buildings the acid reacts with the carbonate in a neutralisation reaction. Metal Carbonate +Acid  Salt+Water+Carbon dioxide Calcium carbonate  Calcium chloride+ +Hydrochloric acid water+carbon dioxide CaCO3 + HCl CaCl2 + H2O + CO2

  5. Examples Calcium carbonate  Calcium nitrate + water + Nitric acid + carbon dioxide CaCO3 + 2HNO3 Ca(NO3)2 + H2O + CO2

Magnesium carbonate+  Magnesium chloride hydrochloric acid + water +carbon dioxide MgCO3 + HCl MgCl2 + H2O + CO2 In these reactions the H+ of the acid reacts with the CO3- ions of the metal carbonate to form water and carbon dioxide. The H+ ion is replaced by the metal ion: Neutralisation reaction.
