Background • The Area Resource File (ARF) has been supported by HRSA/BHPR since the late 1970’s • The ARF system and database change in response to user needs (based on inquiries and feedback) • Over the past 4-5 years, well over 150 peer reviewed journal articles have cited the ARF • ARF products – ASCII and MS Access versions via CD, and web-based HRCCT

Representative Data • Data from over 75 sources are processed annually, to provide county-level data on: • Health workforce (see next slide) • Hospitals, surgi-centers, LTC, hospices, HHAs • Hospital utilization and expenses • Health professions training (see next slide) • Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries • Mortality and natality • Population characteristics (age, gender, employment) • Socio-economics, area characteristics, codes

  4. Health Workforce Data • Extensive time-series data on MDs and DOs by specialty, practice setting, gender, age • Details on advanced practice nurses and physician assistants • Recent data on podiatrists, pharmacists, psychologists, optometrists, audiologists, physical therapists, speech/language pathologists • Training data for MDs, DOs, dentists, dental auxiliaries, podiatrists, optometrists, pharmacists, veterinarians
