Aligning your Work with your Values Presented by the Lawyers Assistance Program Facilitated by Robert Bircher
Work and Values • Get a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life! • The first step in career change is self assessment-looking internally not externally (for the perfect job) • This involves a rigorous investigation of your personal strengths and preferences • These are your interests, skills, values, people contact, work environment
Work and Values • Values-”intangible guiding principles and goals that bring meaning to your work and motivate your involvement and commitment” • For example-recognition, variety, intellectual challenge, helping others etc. • If your work clashes with your values you will experience an unsettling doubt about whether you are doing the right thing. This could be subtle or quite obvious
Work and Values • Some lawyers may only need to make minor adjustments-ie do yoga at lunch instead of obsessing about files at the local greasy spoon restaurant • Some may need to make a radical career change • Law is not the problem-what you need to focus on is your relationship with the law • How can I alter this relationship so it is more consistent with my values?
