  1. State of Iowa Science Fair Hoyt Middle School Parent Information Night Thursday, March 5, 2009

  2. Dates and Times • The fair will be held Friday March 27 and Saturday March 28 at Hilton Coliseum in Ames • Public viewing hours are: • Friday 12:00-5:00 • Saturday 9:30-4:00 • Awards Ceremony will be held Saturday 5:00pm-6:30pm

  3. Transportation • A bus will be provided to and from the fair from Hoyt each day. The bus will leave Hoyt at : • 7:30am on Friday (return at 6:15pm) • 6:30am on Saturday (return at 7:30pm) • Parents are invited to ride the bus both days. (Parents may also drive their student if they wish) • If you plan to ride the bus, please sign up on the transportation sheet

  4. Food and other Expenses Both days sandwiches and salads will be available for purchase at Hilton Coliseum during lunch times. Your student may also bring small snacks or water bottles for throughout the day.

  5. Chaperones • We encourage parents to attend the fair with their student. • If you would like to chaperone on Friday or Saturday, please add your name, phone and email address to the sign in sheet

  6. Student Expectations • Your student will need to have their display board, journal and any other items for their project to Hoyt by Wednesday, March 25. • Your child should rework their display to show their absolute best work. • Their title should be easy to read, the display should be colorful, and should include all of the following parts: Introduction, question, hypothesis, materials list, procedure, data, conclusion.

  8. Photography • Photographs are allowed if: • They are not offensive or inappropriate • They are from the Internet, magazines, newspapers, journals, etc. and credit lines are attached • They are depictions of the student All must have a credit line, even if they were taken by the student

  9. More Student Expectations • They should also include photos of their experiment if possible. • If they would like to bring some portions of their experiment to display, that would be outstanding. • They should also prepare a speech to tell the judges about their project, and should practice this with you. • They should dress appropriately, dress clothes preferred, but be comfortable

  10. Parent Permission • Please sign the parent permission form before you leave. Your student will need this form to ride the bus to and from the fair.
