  3. What is the Compact? Established in 1998 Refreshed in 2009, renewed in 2010 Outlines key principles to enable good partnership working between public and voluntary sectors Every local area in England covered, also nationally www.compactvoice.org.uk

  4. Five key principles A strong, diverse and independent civil society Effective and transparent design and development of policies, programmes and public services Responsive and high-quality programmes and services Clear arrangements for managing changes to programmes and services An equal and fair society www.compactvoice.org.uk

  5. Why do we need a Compact? Public body that wants to engage Sector that is able to engage Mechanism which enables them to engage effectively The Compact www.compactvoice.org.uk

Why the Compact is important • Clear sense of how to work together and what to expect • Recognition that working together brings more benefit to communities than working alone • Helps to build stronger partnerships • Enables both sectors to manage disputes by outlining expectations www.compactvoice.org.uk

Commissioning - helps commissioners to do their job better – clear processes, reduces ambiguity, shared expectations • Compliance – has power and can be used to hold public bodies to account • Social Value – helps to ensure you get the maximum social value for investment • Partnerships – working together to assess need and plan services ensures that gaps are addressed and best practice followed Key Compact messages? www.compactvoice.org.uk

Involvement – being involved at compact related events and meetings is a way of connecting and a way to find out what goes on locally • Cuts/Decommissioning – good relationships with the VCFS can bring tangible benefits to the statutory sector • Infrastructure Organisations – the Compact was developed specifically to support community groups and infrastructure organisations • Council & Councillors – the Compact is non-party political.
