  1. Congratulations on Receiving Your Assignments! Today we will be talking about: Good Research, Delegate Binders, Getting to Know Your Country & Getting to Know Your Issues Fryeburg Academy March 11, 2012

Good Researching Tips • Highlight – • Always make sure that everything that you three-hole-punch and place into your Delegate Binder is highlighted. • While you read the document, make sure to note all of the important points. • Have a highlighter ready after you print. • Another option is to copy and paste the document you find on the internet into a word processor, and then either bold or change the color of the important points as you read. Afterward, print and place the three-hole punched document into your binder. • Organize – • Always make sure to organize the contents of your binder. • You should always be able to find a document that you are looking for, so make sure you mark or take note of the location of all of the contents of your binder. • KNOW YOUR SOURCES* Always take note so your research and knowledge remains legitimate

  4. Order of Events Receive Background Guide, then: • 1 – Start Country Research • 2 – Start Issue Research • 3 – Write Your Position Paper

The Position Paper • The purpose of the position paper is for students to take all of the most important information about their country’s position on the given topics or issues. • The position paper is frequently used to aid a delegate’s first speech at conference . • The position paper is a culmination of important points in the form of a one page essay. NOTE: Position Papers will be discussed in more detail later on!

Background Guides • The Committee chairs publish a background guide for the delegates to prepare and research prior to conference • Always make sure to access the committee’s Background Guide and use it as a place to begin your research • This is the PRIMARY resource for delegates’ research! • It will set the tone for the upcoming conference and give the delegate an idea of where topics could be headed during debate

  7. Country Research Questions • These questions will be very helpful to your preparation, but please do not limit your research to just these questions. They are simply a guideline to help ease you into the research process. Any information that you can find about your country will be helpful.

  8. Country Research In order to become a true diplomat for your country, you must understand how your country relates to other countries of the world. It’s important to always consider what your country would do in any given situation; how your country would feel about particular discussion brought up in debate; what would it be willing to sacrifice, etc. • History • Government (i.e. Democracy, Communist, Socialist, etc.) • Culture • Economic Concerns • Environmental Concerns • Security Issues • Alliances • Etc.

Issue Research • What is the history of your issue? • i.e. “The definition of Torture” • Why it is important internationally? • This will help you see the issue on a bigger scale so that you can better understand where your specific country is coming from (and your stance on the issue as your country’s representative). Important Questions to Answer: • Why is the issue significant? • Is it a problem? • What has been done to address the issue in the past? • Recently?

Issue Research, Continued. • How has the issue evolved over time? • What are some of the challenges with the issue, what are some of the challenges that have emerged over time? • What are some of the approaches that have been taken to deal with these challenges? Resources – UN Resolutions, International Treaties, Domestic Laws, Politicians speeches, etc.

  16. The Issues and Your Country • What has your country done domestically regarding the issue? • What has your country done internationally?

  17. Research Tips (Reminder!) Start broad with your research, then go narrow • Active reading helps for research • Make sure to highlight & underline key points so that specific facts are easy to find • Also, try isolating specific material and organize it so that it is easy to find in your delegate binder • Use a variety of sources: i.e. newspapers, articles, periodicals NOTE: Make sure to use sources from multiple different perspectives i.e. the CIA website is a United States perspective, so is biased in that way

Homework Assignment DUE IN 2 WEEKS: • Country Info H/W: Completed Country Info Chart, Answered Questions about Country (Economic, Military, Cultural, Foreign Relations Questions) • Issue/Topic Info H/W: Know the history of your issues and the importance of the issues on an international scale
