  1. Bits & BYTES TELPAS, STAAR-ALT & Other Online Testing Presented by: Nancy Webster, Galena Park ISD & Tracy McDaniel, Spring ISD

  2. What is TELPAS? • The Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) is designed to assess the progress that limited English proficient (LEP) students in grades K-12 make in learning the English language. There are two parts: • Holistic rating • TELPAS Reading • multiple choice assessment (grades 2-12) • holistic rating (grades K & 1) • Assesses current LEP students only

  3. What is STAAR Alt? • STAAR Alternate is designed for the purpose of assessing students in grades 3–8 and high school who have significant cognitive disabilities and are receiving special education services. • This is not a multiple choice assessment • All grades (3-11) move to STAAR-Alt this year

  4. What do I need to think about this fall? • Sources of Information • TEA Student Assessment web site • www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment • What’s New • TETNs • Know who will coordinate TELPAS & STAAR Alt on your campuses

  5. Implications • STAAR Alt • Your special education department is key here • ARDs • New participation requirements • Selection of Test Administrators • Training of all involved • Website to be announced • Upload STAAR Alt students • www.texasassessment.com

  6. Implications • TELPAS • Current LEP • LPAC • PEIMS data validity • Years in US Schools • Selection of Raters and Test Administrators • Preparing to train raters • The writing collection process • Get all students used to writing in all content areas • Establish a procedure for re-rating a district-determined selection of writing samples a second time • Be sure to document this procedure

  7. Training Center • Teachers must enroll in the site themselves to take the assessments. You can not create an account for them. • https://texas.pearson.desire2learn.com

  8. Statewide User Look-Up • Use this tool to look up teachers state-wide to see their training status.

  9. Authorize Campus & District Coordinators • This tool grants you access to authorize users who are campus test coordinators. • Users can request campus test coordinator access and you are sent an email to verify they are CTCs. • If you have someone supporting you at the district with TELPAS you can grant them DTC Assistant rights.

  10. TELPAS & TAKS-Alt Reports • These reports enable you to monitor the training of campus personnel. • My favorite report is the At-a-Glance Report.

  11. Texas Assessment Management System • Your source for all things testing. • www.pearsonaccess.com

  12. Texas Assessment Management System Manual • The second most important thing next to your DCCM.

  13. Administrative Management Link • Use this link to create accounts for all your CTCs and teachers. • You can upload a .csv of all of your teacher accounts here (time saver). • Do this at the beginning of the year

  14. Organization Tab • Helps you change from one organization to another • You can change from a district view to a campus view which is required for some pieces of TELPAS/TAKS Alt.

  15. Student Data Tab • Think of this tab as you student database. Add in new students when then enroll in your district.

  16. A email is sent to show your status.

  17. Student Data:Manage Student Directory • This tab lets you search for students statewide based on Texas testing history or add new students not in the testing database. • This tab also gives you demographics on students when you find their name. • Student Details • This is where you attach a student to a campus. • Enrollments

  18. Test Management • This tab allows you to register students for testing, create sessions and manage those sessions during testing.

  19. Test Management: Register Students • This section is where you sign students up for the test. • When you choose a student you can update their demographics and assign them to a group and a test. • Students must first be present in the Student Data Tab.

  20. Test Management:Manage Test Sessions • During testing this helps the DTC and the CTC keep track of who is testing and when they have completed. • If you click on a group you will see all the students in that group and their testing status in Session Details. • This is also where you proctor cach the tests from. • If you click on a student name in the Session Details it takes you to the Student Test Details Screen, you can mark a students accommodations and score code.

  29. Other online testing • STAAR EOC & TAKS • Decide • who will test • when they will test • the modality (paper or online) • Consider • Resources • Computers • Bandwidth • Calculators

  30. Other online testing • Get ready to create and double check the accuracy of your precode data file • Are all courses and sections for a given EOC covered? • i.e. Are ESOL I students in the English I data file? • Do the number of students for a given course match the number of students indicated to take an EOC exam in the data file? • Is the modality (paper or online) correctly indicated in the precode data file?
