  4. 2. How do you motivate anyone? • Can a leader find the “hot buttons”? • Can you “motivate,” but not manipulate?

  5. 3. What motivates you? • Pride • Enjoyment • A sense of duty or obligation • Recognition – applause and awards • Acceptance • Tangible reward • Positive “K.I.T.A.”

  6. 4. How do you motivate volunteers? • What is a “volunteer”? • Recognize differences in members • If not pay or duty, which rewards work?

  7. 4. How do you motivate volunteers? • Differences between “command” and supervision and leading volunteers?

  8. 5. Real Challenges with Volunteers • Volunteers can “walk” 3 ways • How can you keep them?

  9. Six Special Challenges • He’s willing, but is he able? • He’s able, but will he be available? • “We have always done it this way.” • “You can’t do that in this Lodge.” • “I didn’t ask for this, you asked me!” • “I changed my mind.”

  11. Challenge No. 2: Overcommitted Members He’s able, but will he be avail-able? • Watch out for the man who can’t say “no.” • Sometimes it’s better to go with a novice. • As a leader you must choose

  12. Challenge No. 3: Status quo guardian “We have always done it this way.” • Listen to the “old timers” • Don’t be intimidated; it’s your decision • Don’t be manipulated to name someone to a committee just because he always did the task before.
