Religious Freedom in the New England Colonies: Establishment and Struggles for Independence

The New England Colonies in British America, including Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts Bay, and New Hampshire, were havens for those seeking religious freedom. The Pilgrims, led by William Bradford, established Plymouth after landing off course in 1620. The Massachusetts Bay Company, formed by Puritans, settled in Boston in the 1630s, leading to the Great Migration of over 15,000 settlers. Conflicts and alliances with Native Americans, such as Squanto and Massasoit, shaped early relationships. Dissenters like Roger Williams and Thomas Hooker founded Rhode Island and Connecticut, respectively, to escape Puritan rule. These colonies laid the groundwork for religious tolerance in America.
