It is often mistaken for a cereal, but it is actually a member of the chenopod family, similar to chard and spinach. We typically eat the Quinoa seeds. How does a “Superfood" trend in the US affect producers in Bolivia? What is Quinoa? Because Quinoa is a high quality protein, nutrient dense food, full of health benefits, it has become very popular in the US. Although Bolivian farmers benefit from the increased demand, there are also negative consequences felt by the Bolivian people, especially in the poorer community. Increased demand for Quinoa can lead to depleted water sources, sterile land, and increased prices in Bolivia.
