  1. The Power of Expression By Devan McDaniel ENGL 1102 Mr. Andrew Brown March 2, 2013

  2. “Huge Wave”

  3. Image Title: Huge WaveBibliographic Citation: Sture, Hannah. "KerbyBrown."tumblr.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 1 May 2013. <www.tumblr.com/tagged/kerby%20brow Topic: CourageImage Sub-Genre:  PhotoMode: ExpressiveFound Where: World Wide WebReason For Selecting This Image: This man’s courage and confidence are astounding. Kerby Brown is a professional surfer. Some would call his willingness to risk his life surfing giant waves insanity. This man is dedicated to his passion in a way that most people never will be.What This Image States About Power: At first glance, this image speaks about the power of nature. This wave could crush and kill the man if he falls. Secondly, this image displays the power of human fortitude. Brown’s dedication to conquer nature is inspiring, to say the least. The image as a whole is very expressive and evokes a sense of insignificance in me. It is difficult to place myself in the position of the surfer, and when I do it makes me wonder what would compel a man to do something like this.

  4. Untitled

  5. Image Title: Untitled Bibliographic Citation: Eddie (No real name given). "Untitled”. flikr.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 1 May 2013. <http://www.flickr.com/photos/eddielaw/2 Topic: Wealth and PovertyImage Sub-Genre:  PhotoMode: ExpressiveFound Where: World Wide WebReason For Selecting This Image: There is a stark contrast between the business men in their suits and the impoverished shoe shiners that caught my attention. It seems as though the business men have no qualms with the great divide between them and the poor men tending to their expensive shoes. What This Image States About Power: Clearly, the men with money have the power. The men in rags are subjected to humility, literally at the feet of the powerful business men.

  6. “Pilgrim”

  7. Image Title: “Pilgrim”Bibliographic Citation: Gao (No real name given). "Pilgrim." flickr.com. N.p., 3 May 2007. Web. 1 May 2013. <http://www.flickr.com/photos/star_trooper/523034513/>. Image Sub-Genre:  PhotoMode: ExpressiveFound Where: World Wide WebReason For Selecting This Image: I was drawn in by the look on this man’s face. He is beyond exhausted, dragging himself forward. Such is his dedication to his journey. What This Image States About Power: I see this image as a commentary on the power of belief. This man is so devout that he would continue his pilgrimage despite his inability to walk. He would do anything to reach his destination for the sake of his beliefs.

  8. “Riot in the City”

  9. Image Title: “Riot in the City”Bibliographic Citation: Nguyen, Son. "Riot in the city ."Photography Served. N.p., 5 Mar. 2007. Web. 7 May 2013. <http://www.photographyserved.com/Gallery/Riot-in-the-city/174502>. Topic: Public Outrage Image Sub-Genre:  PhotoMode: ExpressiveFound Where: World Wide WebReason For Selecting This Image: Despite almost certainly harsh consequences, this man stands defiantly in the street to show his objection to the results of an election in France in 2007. While it may not be a very diplomatic approach to a problem, it does grab my attention. What This Image States About Power: The subject has had enough of the men in power and has decided to show that by rioting in the streets. This is his attempt to change the balance of power, or at least make his outrage clear.

  10. “Man Mutilated in Rwanda”

  11. Image Title: “Man Mutilated in Rwanda” Bibliographic Citation: Nachtwey, James. "Man Mutilated in Rwanda." thepirata.com. Magnum Photos, n.d. Web. 1 May 2013. <thepirata.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/hutu-man-mutilated.jpg>. Topic: The Rwandan Massacres of 1994Image Sub-Genre:  PhotoMode: ExpressiveFound Where: World Wide WebReason For Selecting This Image: Upon viewing this photo I immediately had a gut-wrenching feeling, a feeling of disgust knowing that someone could be so horrifically scarred by another human being, simply because he is different. The massacres in Rwanda have been played down by our society to the point that most people my age have no idea what happened there in the early nineties. What This Image States About Power: The men who did this to the subject were “Interahamwe”, Tutsi fighters who conducted the genocide in Rwanda. The Tutsis gained control of the country after assassinating the Rwandan president, and proceeded to systematically kill off the Hutus, nationwide. They exerted their power on the Hutu population and the results are evident. This man somehow lived, but he will be forever reminded of the horrors of the massacres.

  12. New Year’s Eve, St. Jacques, Perpignan, 2006

  13. Image Title: New Year’s Eve, St. Jacques, Perpignan, 2006Bibliographic Citation: Denzel, Jesco. "Jesco Denzel." Verve Photo. N.p., 24 Dec. 2008. Web. 1 May 2013. <http://vervephoto.wordpress.com/2008/12/24/jesco-denzel/>. Topic: Foreign culture Image Sub-Genre:  PhotoMode: ExpressiveFound Where: World Wide WebReason For Selecting This Image: I was a bit shocked when I first saw this picture. This gypsy boy, like many gypsy boys, was allowed to start smoking at a very early age. What This Image States About Power: Gypsy children are encouraged to mature much earlier than the average American child. It is not uncommon for the boys to smoke. The fact that I was shocked to see a child smoking a cigarette shows the power of cultural differences. The boy’s father can even be seen resting his hand on the boy’s head, clearly in approval of his son’s behavior.

  14. “Pain and Beauty”

  15. Image Title: Pain and Beauty Bibliographic Citation: Unknown. "35 Powerful Photos." Noupe. N.p., n.d. Web. 1 May 2013. <www.noupe.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/solider-story.jpg>. Topic: The effects of war, emotional hardshipImage Sub-Genre:  PhotoMode: ExpressiveFound Where: World Wide WebReason For Selecting This Image: This man’s face speaks volumes about his experiences. You can see the effects of what he has seen in his eyes. His dirty face, his tired appearance, his weapon leaning on the wall beside him, all help to tell a story about what this man has done and where he has been. What This Image States About Power: This image says something about the emotional power of war. It can be viewed as a commentary on all of the mental hardships that are endured by combat veterans, which have only been brought to light in the last couple of decades.

  16. “Candy Cigarette”

  17. Image Title: Candy CigaretteBibliographic Citation: Mann, Sally. "Candy Cigarette." ffffound.com. N.p., 19 Oct. 2007. Web. 1 May 2013. <img.ffffound.com/static-data/assets/6/50849f1627bedb597315a2fac1c1e5559ea2edc0_m.jpg>.  Topic: Youth in rebellionImage Sub-Genre:  PhotoMode: ExpressiveFound Where: World Wide WebReason For Selecting This Image: This little girl grabbed my attention immediately. Her gaze seems weathered and tired, like she has seen more in youth than most people of fortune do their entire lives. She stands defiantly, holding her candy cigarette like she has not doubt seen her mother or some other adult do. What This Image States About Power: This image makes a statement about the childhood desire to be grown-up. This little girl is playing pretend, but what does it say about our society if children aspire to be smokers? The idea of the power of our adult influence on our youth also persists.

  18. Piece- A black and white photo of a little girl holding a candy cigarette. • Agent- photographer Sally Mann. • Receiver- the intended audience consists of people who understand the rebellious nature of children. • Agenda- The photographer wants us to wonder what this girl’s story is. The image brings several questions to mind. • Demands- There are no clear demands being made by the artist. • Inquiries- Who is this little girl? Where was this image taken? Why is there a man on stilts in the background? Is that actually a candy cigarette or a real one? • Gains- I think this is a beautiful picture and it makes me think about the things that I used to do as a child to be more like an adult. I remember buying my own candy cigarettes from the ice cream truck that stopped by my school. I wonder how much I have in common with this child. • Motivators- I can only speculate what drove the photographer to take this image, but the look on the girl’s face is almost haunting. Her expression is more like that of an adult than that of a girl her age.

  19. “Unnamed (I Miss Her)”

  20. Image Title: “Untitled (I Miss Her)”Bibliographic Citation: Unknown. "I Miss Her." noupe.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 2 Apr. 2013. <www.noupe.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/miss-story.jpg>. Topic: Love LostImage Sub-Genre:Photo/graffitiMode: ExpressiveFound Where: World Wide WebReason For Selecting This Image: It begs many questions. I want to know who wrote the message, who the girl is, and what caused them to be separated. Many people can relate to the grief of losing a loved one. This graffiti is unusually emotional. What This Image States About Power: The simple sentence says so much with only three words. To anyone who can relate to it, the image speaks volumes about the power of emotional bonds. We’re unsure if the girl left the artist or died, but what is clear is that it has affected him greatly enough to need to express his loss to others.

  21. Piece-The side of a one-story brick building with the words “I MISS HER” painted in white. • Agent-Unknown graffiti artist. • Receiver-The intended audience is anyone passing by on the street, or maybe the artist only did it for himself. • Agenda-It seems that the one who wrote the words needed a way to express his grief. • Demands- There are no clear demands being made by the artist. • Inquiries-Who wrote the words? Who is the girl and what were the circumstances that led to her going away? • Gains-This image speaks to me in its simplicity. It is highly relatable and, I imagine, most people have their own unique responses to it. • Motivators-The photographer was probably motivated to take the picture for the same reasons I enjoy the subject. It makes me wonder what the story is behind it.

  22. “Arirang Mass Games”

  23. Image Title: “Arirang Mass Games”Bibliographic Citation: Zachary, Brendyn. "Arirang Mass Games." noupe.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 1 May 2013. <www.noupe.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/games-story.jpg>. Topic: IndividualismImage Sub-Genre:  PhotoMode: ExpressiveFound Where: World Wide WebReason For Selecting This Image: What This Image States About Power:

  24. Piece-A large crowd of people signs painted matching colors at the Arirang Mass Games in North Korea. One lone person stands out, having dropped his painted board. • Agent-Photographer Brendyn Zachary. • Receiver- The intended audience could be anyone, but more than likely it is not intended for North Korean nationals. • Agenda- The photographer wanted to make a statement about being an individual. Even in North Korea, a place where it seems individualism is frowned upon, a person can stand up and be unique. • Demands- There are no clear demands being made by the artist. • Inquiries- Who is the person standing up? Why is he/she standing? • Gains-I immediately saw this as a statement about individualism. I embrace being my own person and I hope for everyone to do the same. This person may not have been making a statement himself, but it can be viewed as one, none-the-less. • Motivators-The photographer probably saw this person getting up and knew immediately that he needed to take a picture. It would have been obvious to anyone watching. Thousands of people were participating in unison for this event and one lone Korean stood out among the crowd.
