  1. Antarctic activities Steve Colwell British Antarctic Survey

  2. AntON stations Green: AntON stations; Blue: AntON associated stations; Yellow: AntON island station; Red: stations no longer reporting in real-time

  3. AntON • Operational stations in Antarctica listed in OSCAR/Surface that are not shown as part of AntON are: • 89011 Soerasen 71°12’S 10°00’W • 89047 Filchner 80°30’S 42°30’W • 89776 Bharati 69°25’S 76°11’E • 89817 Bunger Hills 65°15’S 100°36’E

  4. AntON expansion • Request that Antarctic operators update their station details in OSCAR/Surface. • Add southern South America stations to AntON and 4 other Antarctic station that are in OSCAR/Surface but not part of AntON. • The idea of being able to send out Aviation Weather Report (METAR/SPECI) reports in delayed mode on the GTS is going to be investigated. • COMNAP are producing a map that will indicate where aircraft were flying in Antarctica this last season. • Scott Carpentier has been in discussion with Dan Van Reede from Kenn Borek about the possibility of getting real-time metrological data from their fleet of aircraft via AMDAR, there are two main concerns. • Issues about compatibility with their avionics • Scott to contact them again to find out the costs of making them compatible • Cost of data transmission via Iridium. • Johan Stander to bring this up at the WMO Satcom Forum.

  5. Contributions to GCW 2016Of the 32 approved CryoNet stations Concordia was the only one in Antarctica

  6. Contributions to GCW 2017Of the 112 approved CryoNet stations there are now 13 in the Antarctic

  7. GCW contributions • Encourage Antarctic operators to propose their stations to be considered as CryoNet stations. • Ensure that existing Antarctic cryospheric datasets are included in the GCW data portal to give them greater visibility. • One example is the accumulation data from the US Antarctic AWS network • ftp://amrc.ssec.wisc.edu/pub/aws/adg/ant/

  8. Antarctic RCC • Setup an Antarctic RCC Task Team. • Engage with the relevant stakeholders to scope out the user requirements from the Antarctic RCC. • In 2015 the WMO sent a survey to COMNAP to gather information on their requirements for forecasts and further analysis of these results need to be carried out and also consider of the outcomes on the COMNAP sea ice challenges workshop. • Once the requirements have been assessed then this can be sent to the PR’s to identify the members who would like to be involved with implementing the Antarctic RCC.
