  1. Your fireplace and chimney can either prove to be warm and cosy or a place where you lose all heat. In the second case, your fireplace can be a health hazard. The majority of the heat escapes up the chimney, and cold air may come down it.

  2. To offset the heat loss, here are some innovative ways you can follow to make your fireplace and the chimney more efficient. Use dampers – make sure to close the damper when not used to prevent any heat escape from your house via the chimney. When there's a fire, keep the damper open so that more air can come down the chimney. This process improves combustion and helps produce more heat. Seal the fireplace when not in use – use recommended glass doors to close and seal the fireplace and prevent any heat loss. But do not close the doors when a fire is burning as this will create a smokier fire and a dirty chimney.

  3. Use seasoned firewood only – when selecting firewood, make sure that it is seasoned and dried. Choosing seasoned firewood will save you money, time as well as energy in the long run. Make sure the chimney is clean – fireplaces and chimneys are bound to get dirty. Soot builds up in the inner lining, and it can prevent heat transfer efficiency. Consult a professional chimney sweep in the Croydon area and clean your chimney regularly to maintain efficiency. Regular cleaning and maintenance will also increase the lifespan of the chimney.
