  5. Solve A Mystery Authors leave clues for you, the reader. You have to be like a detective: collecting the clues, putting them together, and drawing conclusions.

  6. Making an Inference When you make an educated guess about something the author doesn’t say or explain, you are making an inference. A good inference combines what you read with what you already know.

  7. The Strategy Ask Yourself the 5-W How? Questions about something the author does not explain. When? Where? Who? How? WHY? What?

  8. The Strategy Combine your prior knowledge and your experience with the information you have gathered from the text. Then make your Inference!

  9. Remember the Formula What you read What you know + An Inference! =

  10. Let’s Try It The sun’s light began to filter into the kitchen just as Peter began to sip his first coffee of the day. What part of the day is it? Sam carefully threaded the hook through the piece of bait and then threw the line out into the water. He sat a waited for a bite. What is Sam doing?

  11. Let’s Try It Sam looked through the window at the city far below. The light came on informing those on board to fasten their seat belts. They were about to land. Where is Sam? Tom heard a muffled ringing sound. He took the device out of his pocket, flipped it open and said, “Hello?” What is Tom doing?

  12. Let’s Try It! A woman leaves home and makes three left turns. She returns home again. On the way, she passed two women with masks. Who were the two women?

  15. Remember the Formula What you read What you know + An Inference! =

  16. Inferences An inference is an educated guess. Should be based on information in the text and reasonable prior knowledge. Be careful of making wild generalizations and inferences that send your thinking “into orbit.”

  17. Unsupported Inferences Unsupported inferences are NOT based on the text. They ignore facts. They misinterpret details. They draw conclusions that go too far.

  18. Supported Inferences Supported inferences are based in the writer’s text.

  19. Warm Up From yesterday’s notes – compile a list of the 5 biggest events in Poe’s life.
