Summary of Canto’s XII • Dante and Virgil go down across the Phlegethon River into the Plain of Fire’s 7th circle • They enter the first ring of violence, violence towards others • Centaurs stand on the bank of the bloody river with bows and arrows to shoot at any soul that tries to raise itself out of the river • Chiron notices Dante is living from the rocks being able to move underneath his feet • Nessus guides Dante and Virgil through the 1st ring naming the more eminent people punished there

Who’s new in the XII Canto’s? • Who is new in the XII Canto’s ? • Nessus!! • -Nessus is the Centaur, half man half horse, who carries Dante through the first ring of the seventh circle • Nessus & Chiron • Nessus is the Centaur, half man half horse, who carries Dante through the first ring of the seventh circle • Chiron is the head centaur in the first ring

Eternal Punishment • The sinners in the first ring of violence in the seventh circle boil in a river of blood • Any soul caught trying to raise itself out of the river would be shot with a bow and arrow by centaurs guarding the river • Some of the more notorious punished in the first ring were Alexander the Great, Attila the Hun, and Dionysius

The First Ring Of Violence • Dante encountered rough terrain while entering the first ring walking down rough cliffs • Down below the path into the first ring is the river of blood that boils those who do harm to others by acts of violence • At the river of blood, Dante hears the shrieks of those boiling in sin and meets a fleet of Centaurs • Because of the rocky ground, Chiron orders Nessus to carry Dante on his back through the rest of the first ring
