  2. A Whole School Approach to Sustainability

  3. Overall Aim: • Aim: To reinforce the concept of sustainability and to motivate the children to apply the principles to their own lives.

  4. Goals: • To implement an integrated approach to sustainability in the school. • To base activities on the theme of sustainability in subjects including Geography, History, Maths, Science… ect Approach: Children actively learning and controlling their own learning.

  5. Rationale For Aim/ Goals: • This goal will enable the children to gain an integrated view of sustainability that they can apply in their own lives. • We hope that this will enlighten the children in their future lives to make informed decisions on sustainable practices.

  6. Learning Process: Initial introduction: • Visit a yard/area nearby which is littered. • What do you think of this area? • Do you like this? How can we prevent it? • What can we do? Relate to school. Discussion: what would happen if we waste our resources. P.E equipment, Musical Instruments. Base further activities on children’s own ideas/solutions.

  7. Subject Based Activities: • Geography: Visit a local River. Discussion/ Research on pollution and its effects on the environment. • Science: Design simple experiments: To investigate the negative effects of… • History: Talk to locals. Old industries; their effects. • Social Education: Values: what is right/ wrong? How does this effect our lives, our community, the world. Wasting water: some areas have no water.

  8. Subject Based Activities: • Social/ Environmental Education: • For younger classes: Recycling based game. • Children choose what materials to recycle/ not to recycle: Place in different areas.

  9. Subject Based Activities: • Maths: • Data collection on amount of waste produced. • Design an irrigation system for the garden. (Area and measurement: length of pipes…)

  10. Whole School Initiatives: • Recycling Centre. • Area with different bins for different materials. • Organise roles: children resbonsible for management of the area. • School Garden • Children choose what to plant and why? • Waste Management : Careful use of resources: Weekly display of data: how much water/ electricity used/ waste produced in the school?

  11. Whole School Initiatives • Sustainable energy. • Responsibilities/ Roles for children • Looking after resouces: • Empower the children to decide for themselves how to care for their resources.

Rationale for Learning Process • This approach allows the children to be actively involved and to take control and responsibility for their own learning. • The activities will create a foundation of knowledge which will inform the children’s future lives. • The children will discover the importance of the social, ecological and economic necessary for sustainability.

  13. Evaluation • Teacher Observation • Portfolio: individual students compile a portfolio of their work. • School Exhibition Rationale: This method of evaluation is suitable because the procedure and participation of students in the different activities is considered not just a final result. The exhibition will motivation the children to succeed and to participate and also inform wider society (parents, friends and community) of the benefits of sustainability.
