  1. Surreal Hand Drawing • Surrealism was an art movement that started in Europe in the 1920’s. • Surrealist artists believed imagination is closely related to the unconscious. • They sought to combine dreams and fantasy with the everyday world in their artworks. • The results of their creative expression are striking and seem to challenge our understanding of the ‘normal’ world. • We’ll take a look at a few Surrealists before beginning this drawing assignment.

  2. Salvador Dalíwas a well- known surrealist from Spain. His paintings depict dreamlike imagery and everyday objects in unexpected forms. Dalí’s images are often stretched, twisted, and distorted to convey their meaning Persistence of Memory, 1931

  3. Marc Chagall was a Russian-born painter who spent a majority of his career painting in France. His artworks are very dream-like, relying heavily on the unconscious. Poetry was also a frequent influence for Chagall. Promenade, 1917

  4. René Magritte is famous for painting ordinary objects in unusual settings. He also combined objects that are not normally associated with one another. His artwork almost appears to trick or fool the viewer’s eyes. Son of Man1964

  5. Surreal Hand Drawing • For this assignment you will get a chance to experiment with Surrealism. • You will be creating a unique and unusual drawing that starts with the image of a hand. • You will need to think about how you can change your hand into something unexpected. Will the fingers become branches of a tree while the arm forms the trunk? Perhaps each finger will morph into an animal? You decide! • This is your opportunity to really push the limits of your imagination to create something unusual, or even a bit silly.

  6. Questions to Consider • Remember the Elements of Art! How will you use line, shape, color, value, space, and texture to make your drawing come alive? • What will you put in the background? • How much of the original hand shape will you retain? Will it be larger than life? Will you need more than one hand?
