  1. MATH! The only subject that “counts” ;)

  2. About Me Mr. Hershey Yes I am from near Hershey, PA, no I’m not related to the Hershey Chocolate Family (ie, no chocolate money). Or at least no one has told me yet. Graduated from James Madison University with Honors with a BS in Quantitative Finance and minors in Math and Economics. Worked as a Latin American Credit Derivatives Trader at Credit Suisse (CSFB) from 2001-2008.

  3. About Me (cont) I’ve run over 25 marathons in 25 states. I’ve coached Cross-Country and Track since 2016. I love the Orioles and the Ravens and animals! My wife, 3 boys and I have 2 cats, a turtle and a brand new puppy named Daisy! I started teaching Middle School Math in Miami a few years ago and had fun stints in 5th grade and Spanish last year at GCS after we moved here last summer!

  4. 7th Grade Pre-Algebra Topics 1. Integers and Rational Numbers: -⅚ ÷ ⅖ 2. Real Numbers : √17 3. Proportional Relationships: 3/120 = 5/200 4. Percents: part/whole = percent 5. Writing Algebraic and Equivalent Expressions: - ½(x+8) = -½ x - 4 6. Using Equations and Inequalities to Solve Problems: 6(x+8.5) = 123

  5. 7th Grade Pre-Algebra Topics (cont) 7. Solving Linear Equations: y = mx + b 8. Populations and Samples: sample/over total sample = x/total population 9. Probability: Probability = number favorable outcomes/total outcomes 10. Problems Involving Geometry - Circles, Triangles, Angles: ∠A + ∠B = 90° 11. Congruence, Similarity, Parallel Lines/Angles: (2x+10)° = 60° 12. Solving Problems Involving Surface Area and Volume: V of cone = ⅓ Bh

  6. 8th Grade Algebra 1 Topics 1. Solving Equations and Inequalities: 5r - 7 = 2r + 14 2. Linear Equations: y = mx + b 3. Linear Functions: f(x) = 3(x + 2) - 1 4. Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities: y = 2x - 4 and 3x - 2y = 1 5. Piecewise Functions: f(x) = 6x if x ≥ 0, f(x) = -6x if x <0 6. Exponents and Exponential Functions: ∛7 = 7^⅓

  7. 8th Grade Algebra 1 Topics (cont) 7. Polynomials and Factoring: 6x(x^2 - 4x - 3) 8. Quadratic Functions: f(x) = 6x^2 9. Solving Quadratic Equations: x^2 + 3x + 7 = 0 10. Working with Functions: f(x) = √x - 2 11. Statistics: finding mean and standard deviations

  8. How I Teach I utilize the enVision Math 2.0 resources extensively. I use a combination of notes, online Pearson Realize practice and other online resources (Kuta, Khan Academy, Mathletics). I teach my lessons in small chunks, allowing the students to work on examples after learning a concept while I check in with each of them before moving on to the next idea. • Teach content to whole group • Show them steps to work the problem • Students practice individually • Come back as whole group to review I love to mix in fun pair activities after a lesson like “Integer Word Problem Scavenger Hunts” or a “Multi-Step Equations Scavenger Hunt.”

  9. Technology Google Classroom - every class has a page, I post all notes under the current topic, any other materials or worksheets, homework and upcoming assessments. Edlio - every class has a page on my GCS website, I post all notes, homework and upcoming assessments here as well. Parents (and students) can subscribe to their class page. Pearson Realize - every student has a login where they can do online assignments, find the e-text and take assessments. We use Chromebooks consistently in class to get the students comfortable using them during their academic careers.

  10. Grading 4 categories of grades every quarter, each with a weighting: Tests (less frequent and covering a full unit): 45% Quizzes (more often in order to check progress): 25% Classwork/Participation (normally once a week after an in class activity): 20% Homework (not collected daily but students should always be ready): 10% All missed work should be made up as soon as possible to receive full credit.

  11. Homework Used to practice concepts and reinforce the steps needed to solve different types of problems. Students will have homework most nights (not on weekends). If your child is finding the homework drags on I’ve told them to cap it at 30 minutes and just let me know. It is not collected every day but I will be checking and giving completion grades. I encourage the students to email me with questions personally. I’m very responsive to student emails concerning homework and will reply that evening if I’m able.

  12. Extra Help I’m available mornings from 7:40am until 8:25am unless I have a meeting (I don’t have a homeroom). I love when students advocate for themselves by coming to me or emailing me questions! I’m normally free during their lunch/recess period as well. If those times don’t work, please reach out to me about after school. I coach the XC team which is 2-3 days a week, we have faculty meetings some Mondays and I have 3 boys that need shuttled around after school but I’ll try to make it work if no other time works.

  13. Contact Email: mhershey@gcsct.org If you want to talk just email me a phone number and the best time to call. I will get back to you in less than 24hrs, normally within a couple hours.
