  5. Setting the Scene(1.1.4-1.1.5)

  6. naimiṣe 'nimiṣa-kṣetreṛṣayaḥ śaunakādayaḥsatraḿ svargāya lokāyasahasra-samam āsata • Once, in a holy place in the forest of Naimiñäraëya, great sages headed by the sage Çaunaka assembled to perform a great thousand-year sacrifice for the satisfaction of the Lord and His devotees. SB 1.1.4

  7. Prabhupada’s Purport (4th paragraph): • The great sages are always anxious to do good to the people in general, and as such the sages headed by Śaunaka and others assembled at this holy place of Naimiṣāraṇya with a program of performing a great and continuous chain of sacrificial ceremonies. Forgetful men do not know the right path for peace and prosperity. However, the sages know it well, and therefore for the good of all men they are always anxious to perform acts which may bring about peace in the world. They are sincere friends to all living entities, and at the risk of great personal inconvenience they are always engaged in the service of the Lord for the good of all people.

  8. Theme: Vaisnava Compassion • SrilaPrabhupada – Real Compassion • - Most of us came to KC to help ourselves • - Compassionate Institution • Karuna, krpa, etc. • Krishna – Putana • ChaitanyaMahaprabhu (Vasudevavipra) • Rantidev, Avanti Brahmana • Six Goswamis • “Because of their compassion for the poor fallen souls, the six goswamis gave up their exalted positions as ministers and took vows as mendicants” - • Vaishnavas (Power of prayer of a vaishnava)

  9. 1.1.5 • TRANSLATION: • One day, after finishing their morning duties by burning a sacrificial fire and offering a seat of esteem to Śrīla Sūta Gosvāmī, the great sages made inquiries, with great respect, about the following matters. • Srila Prabhupada’s purport: • Morning is the best time to hold spiritual services. • One must learn the transcendental subject by submissive aural reception from the right sources. Therefore these sages addressed the speaker Sūta Gosvāmī with great respect.

  10. Eagerness to Hear When Srila Prabhupada was sitting at Kosi with Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur for hours & hours & hours, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur was speaking & so many people were asking questions & he was answering all of them. But Srila Prabhupada did not speak a word in that whole darshan, he just sat & listened with an eagerness to understand, with an eagerness to serve The next time Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati met Srila Prabhupada in Allahabad, Rupa Goswami Math Allahabad is where Lord Sri Chaitanya instructed Rupa Goswami who also approached with complete submissiveness to serve. So the temple president recommended this is Abhay Charan, he wants to be your disciple. And Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, he saw him & he was very pleased & he said,” Oh! Yes I will initiate him, I marked that he likes to hear.”

  11. Glorifying the speaker: SrilaSutaGoswami(1.1.6-1.1.8)

  12. 1.1.6 The sages said: Respected Sūta Gosvāmī, you are completely free from all vice. You are well versed in all the scriptures famous for religious life, and in the Purāṇas and the histories as well, for you have gone through them under proper guidance and have also explained them.

  13. Srila Prabhupada’s Purport: - To hear and explain them is more important than reading them. One can assimilate the knowledge of the revealed scriptures only by hearing and explaining. Hearing is called śravaṇa, and explaining is called kīrtana. The two processes of śravaṇa and kīrtana are of primary importance to progressive spiritual life.

  14. Preaching as an act of Compassion • “Before we try to purify others, it goes without saying the necessity of our own purification. Apaniacariprabhujiverashikaaya.” • “If you preach you will slowly improve. In the beginning you are not pure. But because we are telling others, we also start practicing. So please preach” • “Therefore narayana-parahsarvenakutascanabibhyati: “One who has become narayana-parah, Krishna conscious, he’s never afraid of any condition of life.”

  15. 1.1.7 & 1.1.8 Translations • (SB 1.1.7) Being the eldest learned Vedāntist, O Sūta Gosvāmī, you are acquainted with the knowledge of Vyāsadeva, who is the incarnation of Godhead, and you also know other sages who are fully versed in all kinds of physical and metaphysical knowledge. • (SB 1.1.8) And because you are submissive, your spiritual masters have endowed you with all the favors bestowed upon a gentle disciple. Therefore you can tell us all that you have scientifically learned from them.

  16. SrilaPrabhupada’s purport • “The secret of success in spiritual life is in satisfying the spiritual master and thereby getting his sincere blessings.” • “ŚrīlaViśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura has sung in his famous eight stanzas on the spiritual master as follows: "I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master. Only by his satisfaction can one please the Personality of Godhead, and when he is dissatisfied there is only havoc on the path of spiritual realization." • “It is essential, therefore, that a disciple be very much obedient and submissive to the bona fide spiritual master.”

  17. RupaGoswami in BRS 2.74 guru-padasrayas tasmat (Shelter) -- Krsna's grace will surely descend to us when we have proper connection. Therefore our first business in culturing Krsna consciousness is to take shelter of Guru. krishna-dikshadi-sikshanam (Instruction) -- "No! Not everyone needs a guru. Only one who wants to put an end to the miserable conditions of material existence-he needs a guru, not everyone. Guru is not a fashion.“ visrambhena guroh seva (Service) "The guru is to be honored as much as the Supreme Lord because he is the most confidential servitor of the Lord. This is acknowledged in all revealed scriptures and followed by all authorities. Therefore, I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of Sri Gurudeva." sadhu-vartmanuvartanam (Following Footsteps of Sadhus) -- The pure devotee is able to attract the Lord's affection -- so much so that the Lord himself then desires to render service to his pure devotee. -

  21. 1.1.10 prāyeṇālpāyuṣaḥ sabhya kalāv asmin yuge janāḥ mandāḥ sumanda-matayo manda-bhāgyā hy upadrutāḥ • Translation: O learned one, in this iron age of Kali men have but short lives. They are quarrelsome, lazy, misguided, unlucky and, above all, always disturbed.

  22. Srila Prabhupada’s Purport: “The sages of Naimiṣāraṇya are anxious to disentangle all fallen souls, and here they are seeking the remedy from Śrīla Sūta Gosvāmī.”

  23. 1.1.11 Translation: • There are many varieties of scriptures, and in all of them there are many prescribed duties, which can be learned only after many years of study in their various divisions. Therefore, O sage, please select the essence of all these scriptures and explain it for the good of all living beings, that by such instruction their hearts may be fully satisfied. Srila Prabhupada’s Purport:Taking into consideration the fallen condition of the people in general in this age of Kali, the sages of Naimiṣāraṇya suggested that Śrī Sūta Gosvāmī relate the essence of all such scriptures because in this age it is not possible for the fallen souls to understand and undergo all the lessons of all these various scriptures in a varṇa and āśrama system.
