3. EMPHASIS • This principle deals with dominance. • In works of art, visual emphasis is placed on the most important parts of the work- also called the focal points. • Other things in the artwork may be important, but we look in the focal area to see what the artist emphasized.

5. Value, Size, Detail • Kandinsky emphasized the large black circle in the upper left corner of his work. The object is different from everything else in the painting and therefore it "stands out".
