  2. Introduction • “In the Balance” an exercise program for people who are at risk of falls • From the FAMA program a need for an exercise program suitable for “people at risk of falls” was identified • Funding from Vic Health • Commenced 2002

  3. In the Balance - Aim • To provide a safe environment where elderly people who were at risk of falls could come together to exercise

  4. In the Balance - Objectives • Improve balance • Increase or maintain strength • Increase opportunities for social interaction

  5. In the Balance – The Program • Staffing • Warm up • Circuit of different workstations – strength balance function • Sessions duration and frequency

  10. Population • Age range 64y to 89y (median 79y) • Diagnosis • Gait aid status • Transport • Recruited via FAMA

  11. Impact • Measurements pre entry into “In the Balance” at FAMA • Re-measured at FAMA at 6 months review • Data of 15 participants of the exercise program were analysed

  12. Balance Measurements Decreased TUG=improvement Increased other scores = improvement * t-test, p<0.05

  15. Participants’ Feedback • Have you noticed any changes • Chair/bed/car transfers easier, can get out of bed without bedsides • Able to reach for things • More freedom in leg movements • Quite balanced, can regain balance at times when close to a fall • Doing a little more

  16. Participants’ Feedback • Anything you can do now that you could not do before • Can lift leg better, more confident walking • Better on heels • Can sit to stand without using arms • Walk better

  17. Summary • Need to consider that we are dealing with an ageing population • We feel that “In the Balance” is a beneficial program • The results have shown that it has made a difference to the target population
