A description of Jamaica Jamaica is often times referred to as a cultural superpower, because though a very small island nation, it’s name and various aspects of it’s culture especially music is world renowned. Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean and is one of the larger set of islands referred to as the Greater Antilles. Jamaica’s neighbours are Haiti to the north east, Cuba to the north and Cayman Islands to the north west. Jamaica is the third largest English speaking country in the western hemisphere and a founding member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

  3. The Jewish community in Jamaica The Jews in Jamaica live in Kingston . They have not had a rabbi for 25 years and a kosher butcher for 50.On the 5th of October 2006 they celebrated the 350th anniversary of the community.

  5. A short History of the Jews in Jamica The first Jews came to the island during the Spanish occupation of the island, 1494-1655. These Jews came from Spain and Portugal. They fled because of the Spanish inquisition. To conceal their identity they referred to themselves as "Portuguese" and practiced their religion secretly. At the time of the British conquest of the island in 1655, General Venables recorded the presence of many "Portuguese" in Jamaica. The Jews were allowed to remain after the conquest and began to practice their religion openly. The Jews were granted British citizenship by Cromwell and this was confirmed in 1660 by King Charles. They attained full political rights in 1831. The status of British citizenship enabled ownership of property by the Jews. Jamaica's Jewish population was never large. However, their contribution to the economic and commercial life of the nation outstripped that of any other group of comparable size in Jamaica.
