Introduction • Main Objectives: • create the national networking infrastructure, • connect all schools in an educational Intranet • provide and support advanced telematic services • Implemented with the collaboration of: • The Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs(MoE) • Research Centres (2) • Universities (8) • Technological Educational Institutes (2) • The GSN planning, implementation and operation is in accordance with the EC policies • Financed by the Second and Third Community Support Framework (~35 MEuro in 1999 - 2004)

Educational Goals • Develop a networked environment which supports the educational process • Promote the collaboration between geographically distributed groups • Offer access to digital libraries and content • Offer flexible search in a certified content • Support creation and distribution of presentations, seminars and lectures • Offer communication with academic institutions • Offer communication with international educational institutions, etc.

GRnet Distribution Network www.sch.gr Backbone & Distribution Network • Backbone: the Greek Research and Technology Network - GRNET www.grnet.gr • Distribution network : consists of 51 nodes (one in each prefecture): • 9 main nodes • 42 secondary nodes • Equipped with 75 routers, 71 servers, a large number of telecommunication circuits and the appropriate software

Implementation issues • The blacklist is collected by a “dumb robot” • Automatic update of blacklist on a monthly base • More than 100.000 URLs are “blacklisted” • Parametric control (according Time, IP or UserId base) • Recording and reporting • Selective logging • Communication with administrators

Conclusions • Successful implementation of the project due to the collaboration among MoE, Universities, Research Centers, GRnet and school communities • MoE develops the national intranet of primary and secondary education • Exploitation of the Universities’ know-how in the network design and implementation • Exploitation of national infrastructures (e.g.GRnet) • Cost effective operation compared to ISPs • A wide range of services provided to the users • Creation of an environment for the deployment of ICT in education • Creation of the necessary conditions for the development of educational content
