  4. WHY INVEST IN NANOTECH IN TUSCANY (1/4) • Tuscany reinforces research impact on regional territory through the creation of main specialized service centers and giving life to synergic collaboration with other poles • Tuscany has many companies interested in Nanotech and many others with high technology content that develop Nanotech, often in harness with Research Centers • Tuscany has a strong vision aimed at developing the sector, both in terms of regional policies, Research Centers and local companies • The Nanotech sector in Tuscany is buzzing with potential for investors and partners across multiple areas • Impressive scientific and manufacturing skills have given life to Tuscan research institutions interested in Nanotech innovation to create high-tech products • 20 specialized Nanotech Research Centers in Tuscany, along with companies interested in the Nanotech sector, can facilitate Nanotech application and develop new companies

  5. WHY INVEST IN NANOTECH IN TUSCANY (2/4) UNIQUE ADVANTAGES IN BRIEF A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT • Excellence: • An integrated research system across the Region supports companies in developing specific and competitive products • Experience: • Tuscan Universities and related spin-offs have a long-standing and internationally recognized tradition in research • Innovation: • The close links between research and industry in the region make it easy to transform Nanotech ideas into products with commercial potential • A unique model of collaboration between industry, academia, research centers and public bodies has fostered the growth of spin-off companies, SMEs and leading world-class companies • Companies investing in Tuscany can highly benefit from the overall environment with their own support • A specific Nanotech incubator supports the growth of small companies; most of them also benefit from regional funds through know-how, technology and scientific skills transfer • An excellent Pole adopts a specific Program for know-how, technology and scientific skills transfer, to the perceiving of operative goals • Companies are supported by a number of services, such as incubation and post-incubation, equipped facilities, advice and funding opportunities

  6. WHY INVEST IN NANOTECH IN TUSCANY (3/4) Tuscany has achieved impressive results through participation in European Research projects “GRAPHENE FLAGSHIP – Graphene-Based Revolutions in ICT And Beyond” GRAPHENE FLAGSHIP (2013-foreseen end 2016) aims to take graphene and related layered materials from a state of raw potential to a point where they can revolutionize multiple industries – from flexible, wearable and transparent electronics, to new energy applications and novel functional composites. Its main objectives are to develop material technologies for ICT and beyond, identify new device concepts enabled by graphene and other layered materials, and integrate them to systems that provide new functionalities and open new application areas The Project, coordinated by Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg (Sweden), sees the participation of CNR, represented by NEST, a research center located in PIsa where researchers and teachers investigate scientific issues at the nanoscale “MERIDIAN – Micro and Nano Engineered Bi-Directional Carbon Interfaces for Advanced Peripheral Nervous System Prosthetics and Hybrid Bionics” MERIDIAN (2012-foreseen end 2015) brings novel technology of biocompatible, low bio-fouling, high electrochemical performance carbon nano-materials to in-vivo preclinical applications and at the same time to use these materials to develop a highly advanced concept of intimate intracellular contact, based on bottom-up technology. Such bionic interfaces resemble true intrinsic physiological properties of neural somas and form a tight, extremely low-invasive bidirectional coupling for both motor and sensory functions The Project, coordinated by Inter-university Micro-Electronica Centrum VZW in Belgium, sees the participation of ScuolaSuperioreSant’Anna, one of the three Universities in Pisa “CARINHYPH – Bottom-up fabrication of nano carbon-inorganic hybrid materials for photocatalytic hydrogen production” CARINHYPH (2013-foreseen end 2015) deals with the hierarchical assembly of functional nanomaterials into novel nanocarbon-inorganic hybrid structures for energy generation by photocatalyic hydrogen production, with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene the choice of nanocarbons. The scientific activities include the development of new functionalisation strategies targeted at improving charge transfer in 3 types of hybrids and therefore their photocatalyticactivity The Project, coordinated by Fundacion IDMEA Materiales in Spain, sees the participation of ConsorzioInteruniversitarioNazionale per la Scienza e la TecnologiadeiMateriali, located in Florence, a consortium that gathers 46 Italian Universities
