  2. Muscle Structure

  3. Muscle Structure • Muscles contain connective tissues which holds muscle cells together and provides elasticity • Muscle tissue also contains large amounts of contractile filaments. • These protein filaments are called actin and myosin • Actin and myosin enables muscles to contract • Other characteristics of muscle tissue include the ability to stretch or expand and also the ability to respond to stimuli

  4. Muscle Structure

  5. Function • Skeletal Muscles • The primary function of skeletal muscles are to produce voluntary gross and fine movement • Skeletal muscles also protect organs • The abdominal muscles and the muscles of your lower back helps to protect your vital organs

  6. Function Skeletal Muscles

  7. Cardiac muscle • Cardiac muscles pumps blood • The contraction of the heart is involuntary and primarily controlled by your heart’s electrical system

  8. Smooth muscle • Smooth muscles are the muscles you have in your stomach and intestine • They work to process the food you eat • Smooth muscles in the walls of your blood vessels ensure blood flow

  9. Disease • Distal Muscular Dystrophy • Symptoms: weakness and wasting of muscle of the hands, forearms, and lower legs • Distal muscular Dystrophy is caused by defects genes • typical onset age is 20 to 60 years old. • No known cure
