  2. The Minoans • 2000-1400BC • Lived on the island of Crete • Famous King--- King Minos • Capital city- Knossos • Invented the legend of the Minotaur—half human, half bull

  3. Minoan Art • Reveals much about Minoan culture • Minoans loved nature, beautiful objects and art • Enjoyed sports like boxing, wrestling, and bull leaping • Sacrificed animals to gods

  4. Minoan Culture Ends • Civilization ends about 1200 BC • natural disasters led to decline • Minoan ideas will impact Greece

  5. Phoenicians • Located in present day Lebanon • 1100BC- Phoenicians were most powerful traders • Lived in wealthy city-states

  6. Phoenician Contributions • Alphabet- letters represent sounds • Traded goods from other lands • Shipbuilders and sailors • Contributed to cultural diffusion- spread of ideas

  7. The Origins of Judaism • The area of Palestine called Canaan was the ancient home of the Hebrews, later called Jews • Hebrews were monotheistic- believed in only one god

  13. Kingdom of Israel • After Soloman’s death, the kingdom divides • The kingdom’s fall to the Assyrians and Babylonians • This marks the beginning of division of the region
