  1. What is Science?

  2. Scientia “knowledge” 1) A systematic approach for gaining knowledge about the universe and everything in it.

  3. 2) What is Technology?the VIP is technology at its finest

  4. 2) Technology uses science to solve problems. Example technology and toys; movie. 3) What is Engineering Using science to solve problems. Building better computers. Computer engineering

  5. Building taller buildings.

  6. Building faster cars.

  7. Building better organisms.

  8. 4) Physics is the study of matter and energy. (How matter re-sponds to energy.)

  9. 4) Chemistry is the study of matter and how matter combines.

  10. 5) Religion and myths

  11. 6) Natural Philosophers

  12. 7) Mathematics

  13. Numbers and measurements are not ambiguous. Math is universal. All countries can speak mathematically 8) Scientific method was introduced by Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

  14. 9) The scientific method • Purpose- state a problem. • Research- gather information. • Hypothesis- educated guess. • Experiment- design a test for your hypothesis. • Analysis- record and interpret data • Conclusion- was your hypothesis correct? • REPEAT? REPEAT? REPEAT?

  15. 10) Scientific facts are data obtained by competent observers. Examples: The moon is a planet. Full moons are evil. Gravity causes the moon to orbit the earth.

  16. 11) Scientific Laws or Principles A statement describing a relationship observed to be invariable for a phenomena Examples. 1) What goes up must come down. 2) The Universal Law of Gravity. 3) Archimedes Principle. Laws of nature are different from laws of man. How?

  17. 12) Theories are a set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena. Scientific theories: are based on facts and evidence have been repeatedly tested are widely accepted by scientist can be used for predictions about natural phenomena.

  18. 15) Examples

  19. Religion is n. a belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship. ~ 254 identified Gods, ~ 4200 different religions, ~ 12 classified as “major world religions.”

  21. 15)Observations Information gained using your senses 16) Can you name the 6 senses?

  22. Sight

  23. taste

  24. smell

  25. hearing

  26. touch

  27. 6th sense I see dead people!

  28. 17) Qualitative & Quantitative a) What type of observation? Examples  b) What type of observation? Examples  18) What type of observations are most important in science? QUANTITATIVE!!! Why?

  29. Observation/Inference/Prediction19)Inference – an explanation for an observation (because) 20)Prediction- a forecast of a future observation (future tense)
