  1. Natural Science Lecture 2 - Survey of scientific advances in the world.

  2. Your work was to write • Five ways that science has helped the world progress. • Five problems in the world that can be explained or solved using science.

  3. 1 - In groups of four: • Compare your lists of ways that science has helped the world progress. • Do you all agree on what everyone has written. • Write down how the items on each list are similar. • Write down how the items are different.

  4. 2 - In groups of four: • Compare your lists of problems in the world that can be explained or solved using science. • Do you all agree on what everyone has written. • Write down how the items on each list are similar. • Write down how the items are different.

  5. In your groups: Explain why Korea is hot in summer and cold in winter. The group has to agree on the answer.

  6. Understanding Science: An overview

  7. To understand what science is, look around you. What do you see? Perhaps, your hand on the desk, a computer screen, papers, ballpoint pens, the handsome professor, the sun shining through the window ….

  8. Science is, in one sense, our knowledge of all the stuff that is in the universe.

  9. Our knowledge of all the stuff that is in the universe: from the tiniest subatomic particles in a single atom of the metal in your computer's circuits, to the nuclear reactions that formed the immense ball of gas that is our sun, to the complex chemical interactions and electrical changes within your body that allow you to read and understand these words.

  10. Importantly, science is also a reliable process by which we learn about all that stuff in the universe.

  11. Science is: Knowledge & Process

  12. Science is: Knowledge & Process

  13. However, science is different from many other ways of learning because of the way it is done. Science relies on testing ideas with evidence gathered from the natural world.

  14. Science relies on testing ideas with evidence.

  15. Science relies on testing ideas with evidence.

  16. Science relies on testing ideas with evidence.

  17. This course will help you learn more about science as a process of learning about the natural world and access the parts of science that affect your life.

  18. Science helps satisfy our natural curiosity: why is the sky blue, how did the leopard get its spots, what is a solar eclipse?

  19. With science, we can answer such questions without using magical explanations.

  20. Science can lead to technological advances, and help us learn about important and useful topics, such as our health, the environment, and natural hazards.

  21. Without science, the modern world would not be highly developed.

  22. Millions of scientists all over the world are working to solve questions of how the universe works. They are using their microscopes, telescopes, and other tools to get information.

  23. Scientists are everywhere, searching for the secrets of the universe.

  24. Science is complex and multi-faceted, but the most important characteristics of science are straightforward:

  25. 1 Science focuses exclusively on the natural world, and does not deal with supernatural explanations.

  26. 2 Science is a way of learningabout what is in the natural world, how the natural world works, and how the natural world got to be the way it is.

  27. Science is a way of learning. It is notsimply a collection of facts; rather it is a path to understanding.

  28. 3 Scientists work in many different ways, but all science relies on testing ideas.

  29. 3 Science relies on testing ideas by figuring out what expectations are generated by an idea and making observations to find out whether those expectations hold true.

  30. 4 Accepted scientific ideas are reliable because they have been subjected to rigorous testing.

  31. 4 Scientific ideas have been subjected to rigorous testing, but as new evidence is acquired and new perspectives emerge these ideas can be revised.

  32. 5 Science is a community endeavor. It relies on a system of checks and balances, which helps ensure that science moves in the direction of greater accuracy and understanding.

  33. Science relies on a system of checks and balances. This system is facilitated by diversitywithin the scientific community, which offers a broad range of perspectives on scientific ideas.

  34. Science is not something which just happens in a university laboratory.

  35. 1 Science affects your life everyday in all sorts of different ways.

  36. 2 Science can be fun and is accessible to everyone.

  37. 3 You can apply an understanding of how science works to your everyday life.

  38. 4 Anyone can become a scientist — of the amateur or professional variety.

  39. You can have fun with and make use of science in everyday life.
