Andre Berns Started in the computer industry in 1969 as a junior programmer Did system design and software development for Mainframes, Midrange and PC’s on LARGE, MID, MINI, MICRO size computer platforms Since 1989 on the AS/400 (AS/400 is the MOST reliable!) At SENECA - languages and operating systems

I have worked with Languages such as SL3 / 5 / 7 Micro code, Assembler, Cobol, RPG, FORTRAN, Pascal, Basic Operating systems BBM Microcode, B500, B700, Burroughs MCP, S/36, S/38, OS/400 DEC PDP8, DOS, CP/M, MSDOS Internal Data Representions OCTAL (DEC), HEXIDECIMAL (IBM, Burroughs, Honeywell, Univac) and BINARY (numerical control) Industries Software development, Retail, Wholesale distribution, Manufacturing, Ware housing Financial, Job Costing

Course Structure • 2 hours of lecture • Followed by 2 hours of labs • The purpose of the labs is to enhance the text book and provide you with actual practical problems as they occur in the industry. • It is the hands-on, practical side of the course. Attendance and completion of the labs will be a key factor in completing the course successfully. • Remember PRACTISE makes PERFECT

  5. Lecture and Lab Notes • Lecture notes will be available afterwards from my web page • No Labs will be available from the Web pages. You will be given or told where to retrieve them from at the beginning of the lab. All will have to be completed during the Lab. • !! Each lab will have a “deliverable” associated with it, some of these will be evaluated for marks to be counted towards your final grade!!

  6. Do you want to do well? • Show up for Lectures • Complete the Labs, MARKS! • Do the assignments, a MUST! • Do the required reading • Do the Review questions and labs from your text book, they serve both to re-enforce and for practice • Ask Lots of Questions both during lecture and labs

  7. Material Covered • All chapters in the text book. • One handout • Two tests • The first test will be conducted in the lab • Both tests will include material from chapter 1 onward including all chapters covered up to that date.

  11. Connectivity Software • Hummingbird (used here) (in the Labs) • Client Access (also used here - Check out CD) • Mocha (use from home - download) Software that allows you to connect your PC to the AS/400 using communications.
