Smallpox • Caused by the variola virus • Except for laboratory stockpiles, the virus has been eliminated • Transmitted by direct contact (can be infected by using contaminated bedding or clothing) • Last naturally occurring case was in Somalia in 1977. • Vaccine was used to eradicate the virus • 30% fatality rate

  3. Ebola • Ebola hemorrhagic fever • Five subtypes • Caused by the Ebola virus • Researchers believe that the virus is zoonotic (animal borne) • Infections are acute and spread through direct contact • Last outbreak was in Dec 2008- Feb 2009 • 32 people were infected, 15 died • 160,000 deaths since 2000

  4. Ebola • Symptoms include • Fever • Headache • Sore throat • Weakness • Diarrhea • Vomiting • Stomach pain • Rash • Red eyes • Hiccups • Internal and external bleeding

AIDS • Caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus • Transmitted through sexual contact, blood, from mother to child • People at highest risk • Injection drug users who share needles • Infects born to mothers with HIV • People engaging in unprotected sex • People who received blood transfusions between 1977 - 1985

AIDS • Infection can be asymptomatic for over 10 years • Almost all people infected with HIV, if not treated, will develop AIDS • There is no cure for AIDS • Treatment with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) • Can suppress the levels of HIV, life can be significantly prolonged an improved

Extra Credit – Due March 23rd • Create a presentation (slide show, power point, video, etc.) that contains the following information about any viral disease that infects humans: • What is the biological cause of the disease? (what is the name of the virus) • What are the symptoms of the disease? • How is the disease spread? • What methods are available to prevent, treat, or cure the disease? • What individual actions or circumstance might lead a person to contract the disease? • What social actions or circumstances might influence the spread of the disease? • When was the most recent outbreak? (provide statistical data if possible) The disease must be caused by a VIRUS!!!
