  1. DAAC Product Review Heritage Data Sets Ron Weaver

  2. The Heritage Data Sets • AMSR Validation Data • SMEX, SMEX02, WAKASA BAY, BALTEX • Cold Lands Processes Experiment • Airborne, Satellite, In Situ, Model Output • Other Data • Atmospheric – HARA • Land – • Ocean • Miscellaneous Non-eos workbook DAAC Product Review

  3. AMSR Validation Products Detailed Descriptions

  4. AMSR Validation Products Detailed Descriptions (cont.)

  5. AMSR Validation Data • Heritage: • AMSR Science Team requested NSIDC to manage these validation data, with supplemental funds coming from ESDIS in FY02-05. • Justification • Science • The field programs collected valuable data that can be used during the primary validation period. The DAAC is a sensible way to store and disseminate these data. • EOSDIS • ESDIS project partially funded effort • UWG • Has supported effort • DAAC Responsibility (DAAC, NSIDC Shared, Brokered) DAAC Product Review

  6. CLPX Products Detailed Descriptions

  7. CLPX Products Detailed Descriptions

  8. Cold Lands Processes Experiment • Heritage • Field data collected during the CLPX 02 and 03 field experiments. Funded by NASA and NOAA. NSIDC was funded to be the data managers and eventual data archive via the AMSRE validation efforts. • http://nsidc.org/data/clpx/ • Justification • Science: NASA approved and funded field experiment. • EOSDIS: NASA via AMSRE science team funding for validation efforts sanctioned this effort • UWG: generally supported the effort • DAAC Responsibility (DAAC, NSIDC Shared, Brokered) DAAC Product Review

  9. Heritage Other Products Detailed Descriptions

  10. Heritage – Atmospheric Data • Title NSIDC-0008 Historical Arctic Rawinsonde Archive NSIDC-0033 Arctic Water Vapor Characteristics from Rawinsondes NSIDC-0054 NCEP/NCAR Arctic Marine Rawinsonde Archive • Heritage • Historical Arctic Rawindsonde Data (HARA) and associated input data sets became DAAC data sets because (a) M. Serreze produced the product with NSF funding, and (b) the UWG said these data were important to the NASA polar community. At PoDAG 19, the UWG told the DAAC to not update the dataset, since Drs. Francis and Schweiger were producing a revised atmosphere product. • Justification • Science: NRC has stated that atmospheric sounding data in the Arctic is a high priority. • EOSDIS: • UWG: stated that DAAC should continue distribution until replacement product is completed (PoDAG 19) • DAAC Responsibility (DAAC, NSIDC Shared, Brokered) DAAC Product Review

  11. Heritage – Pathfinder (TOVS) • Title: NSIDC-0027 TOVS Pathfinder Path-P Daily Arctic Gridded Atmospheric Parameters • Heritage: • Pathfinder program sanctioned development of a polar subset of TOVS data. Retrieval of soundings is particularly difficult in polar regions, thus making it necessary to separate polar TOVS data from mid-latitude and tropical retrievals. • Justification • Science: Funded pathfinder program to develop data set (Francis and Schweiger PIs) • EOSDIS: Original charge to NSIDC DAAC to house pathfinder data from polar regions. • UWG: supported continued archival and distribution • DAAC Responsibility (DAAC, NSIDC Shared, Brokered) DAAC Product Review

  12. Heritage – Historical Arctic Surface Data • Title: G01092 Historical Soviet Daily Snow Depth Version 2 (HSDSD) NSIDC-0059 Former Soviet Union Monthly Precipitation Archive, 1891-1993 NSIDC-0190 Historical Arctic and Antarctic Surface Observational Data • Heritage: • Former Soviet Union (FSU) surface snowcover observations are stored using DAAC infrastructure. Arctic and Antarctic surface observation data were developed with NASA funding and are archived per PoDAG recommendation (Podag 19) • Justification • Science: surface observations. FSU data are considered ‘rescued data’ A/A surface observations consolidated for ease of accessibility • EOSDIS • UWG: see PoDAG 19 • DAAC Responsibility (DAAC, NSIDC Shared, Brokered) DAAC Product Review

  13. Heritage – Ocean (IAPB, CEAREX, AARI, COADS) • Title: NSIDC-0020 Coordinated Eastern Arctic Experiment (CEAREX) Data NSIDC-0050 AARI 10-Day Arctic Ocean EASE-Grid Sea Ice Observations NSIDC-0057 comprehensive Ocean - Atmosphere Data Set (COADS) LMRF Arctic Subset NSIDC-0084 IPAB Antarctic Drifting Buoy Data • Heritage • CEAREX and AARI data became DAAC data when their original funding program (ONR, EWG) terminated. Both are static data sets. COADS and IAPB are shared data sets • Justification • Science: input data sets to HARA, unique collections from field experiments • EOSDIS • UWG • DAAC Responsibility (DAAC, NSIDC Shared, Brokered) DAAC Product Review

  14. Heritage – Other (Leads ARI, F/T, River ice) • Title: NSIDC-0026 AVHRR Leads-ARI Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures NSIDC-0063 Global Annual Freezing and Thawing Indices NSIDC-0064 Nenana Ice Classic: Tanana River Ice Annual Breakup Dates NSIDC-0069 Polar Pathfinder Sampler: AVHRR, SMMR-SSM/I, and TOVS Samples and Combined Time Series • Heritage • Leads ARI data is a unique collection like CEAREX without continued ONR support. Nenana River Ice Breakup was a contributed dataset without other funding. Both utilize DAAC infrastructure only. (April 28th, 2005 at 12:01 p.m) • Global Freeze Thaw is a shared data set with the Frozen Ground Data Center • Leads ARI is like CEAREX, a unique collection of field data. DAAC infrastructure is utilized for metadata. Data reside on CD-ROM, Polar Pathfinde is a unique compilation of DAAC held data. • Justification • Science: Unique field data sets • EOSDIS • UWG • DAAC Responsibility (DAAC, NSIDC Shared, Brokered) DAAC Product Review

  15. Heritage – Other (SNODAS, Uggi) • Title: G02158 Snow Data Assimilation System (SNODAS) Data Products at NSIDC ARCSS122 When the Weather is Uggianaqtuq: Inuit Observations of Environmental Change • Heritage • SNODAS: DAAC provides infrastructure for storage and distribution. NOAA provided data. Activity level is moderate from FTP site. Remote sensing data integrated with operational models using data assimilation for snow hydrology • ‘UGGI’ CD developed with NSF funding, archive management provided by ADCC, DAAC contributed CD replication services. Very active, ground breaking study of human dimensions of arctic climate change. • Justification • Science: • EOSDIS • UWG • DAAC Responsibility (DAAC, NSIDC Shared, Brokered) DAAC Product Review

  16. Heritage – Other (PARCA) • Title: NSIDC-0095 Program for Arctic Regional Climate Assessment (PARCA) Data Sets • Heritage • Greenland ice sheet glaciological and atmospheric observations collected by the PARCA collaborating investigators. DAAC maintains website and brokers data requests. NSIDC has been asked to archive PARCA data by PoDAG and investigators, but so far very little data have been transferred to NSIDC. • Justification • Science: Original field investigations contributing to basic research on ice sheet dynamics and supporting NASA remote sensing efforts • EOSDIS • UWG: Supports involvement in PARCA activities • DAAC Responsibility (DAAC, NSIDC Shared, Brokered) DAAC Product Review
