  2. How likely is it that you or someone you know will be a victim of violence? • About 1/3 of the victims of violent crimes are teenagers and young adults ages 12-19 • Almost ½ of all victims are under the age of 25 (Bureau of Justice Statistics, US Department of Justice)

  3. Homicide is the second leading cause of death ….. for persons 15-24 years of age….

  4. In 2002…. more than 877,000 young people between the ages of 10-24 were injured in violent acts

  5. Approximately 1 in 13…. required hospitalization

  6. In 2003…. 5,570 young people ages 10-24 were murdered…

  7. That’s an average of …… 15 murder victims a day

  8. 82 percent ….. were killed with firearms

  9. About 9% of murders in the US… were committed by youth under 18 in 2000. Around 1561 youth under the age of 18 were arrested for homicide.

  10. About 1 in 3 high school students say they have been in a physical fight in the past year, and about 1 in 8 of those students required medical attention for their injuries

  11. More than 1 in 6 students …. in grades 6 to 10 say they are bullied sometimes, and more than 1 in 12 say they are bullied once a week

  12. Suicide…. is the third leading cause of death among teenagers in the United States….

  13. About 1 in 11 high school students say they have made a suicide attempt in the past year…..
