Lesson Goals • The students will be able to explain the process of voting and citizens’ roles in the voting process • The students will be able to debate current controversial issues • The students will discuss their opinions and cast their vote about a current issue • The students will understand the electoral process as it relates to determining the outcome of a resolution

  3. Lesson Vocabulary ballot (secret; open) • A method for voting that allows the voter to share his/her opinion without sharing his/her identity is called secret ballot; open ballot is when voters share their opinion and vote openly usually in a group

  4. Lesson Vocabulary candidate • A person who seeks or is nominated for an office

  5. Lesson Vocabulary civic responsibility • The privileges and duties of citizenship (i.e. voting, following the law)

  6. Lesson Vocabulary election • An event where something is chosen by a group of people by voting

  7. Lesson Vocabulary eligible • Qualified or entitled to be chosen

  8. Lesson Vocabulary precinct • One of several districts into which a city or town is divided for voting; each contains one polling place

  9. Lesson Vocabulary registered voter • A citizen officially recognized by a city or government as a voter
